New Condenser Wiring
« on: February 02, 2013, 03:28:01 PM »
Received new condensers from Richard today for 350 GTR. I'm sure the condensers on the bike now are original since the bike has less than 5000 miles on the clock. The black and white leads from the dynamo are soldered directly to old condenser. What the recommended procedure for installing the new ones. Clip the dynamo leads, or melt the original solder to free the leads then solder them to the new condensers?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Oh yeah, and I'm assuming the old condensers need replacing. The spark at the points are yellow not blue and the old condensers seem to have had some blonde/yellowish junk ooze out.

Most guys melt the solder and attach to original wires. This is the way I prefer too.

99% of the time condensers do not need to be replaced, new points, adjusted correctly
and installed on clean point holder plates, all connections from  points, coils, cleaned good is
all that is required to get a good spark.

I have seen ignition switchs cause problems with internal connections.

Thanks Richard, I've spent the last half hour cleaning things up in there and am seeing better looking spark already. I'll try some more cleaning then run it again (when the weather permits) and see how it's doing.

As Richard recommended, I too have soldered the leads when replacing condensers.
I also know I'm not the only one who has put black electrical tape (or other thin insulator of choice) on the inside cover of the cap. The cap isn't far away from the leads on the condensers and you don't want that shorting out.

If you need to replace the condensers i solder the wires and then melt candle wax over the solder joint.
But i agree with Richard condensers very rarely go wrong i own a condensers tester and i never use it!!
Thanks.
