GTO GTR paint colors
« on: January 04, 2018, 09:01:21 PM »
Hello -

Does ANYONE have the color code for the golds used on BS 350's. I have seen what I refer to as the LIGHTER gold, or what I would consider to be a TRUE gold in color. I have a buddy who has a GTR that had black factory decals on it and once the decals were removed, a DARKER shade of gold appeared, with a bit more orange tint to it. In a bright light, you can almost see some green in the color deeper in. When you flip the tank over there is some over spray blue and green, but I am certain this gold is the original color and the blue and green were used to darken the gold. It appears to have a slight metallic sparkle to it. Any thoughts? I would almost say it looks similar to the color on OLDSWARTOUT's 200 survivor he posted a picture of. Would this make sense? Also I have seen a gold color listed on here as Imperial Gold - would that be the true gold color?

BS used two gold colours on the 350s.
The 1970 GTO (chrome tank) used the brighter gold that you mention which is a beautiful colour that really sets the machine off.
The 1971 GTRs (solid colour tank) used a darker gold more like an antique gold. Can never remember the correct colour names but Pup will tell us  :D.
Several members have reported finding a blue undercoat on the gold tanks so that was original.

I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

"Imperial Gold" is the color listed on the factory brochures for the 1970 GTO.

At this point in time it's nothing more than a name, as no factory formula is known to exist and even if it did I doubt the "ingredients" could be sourced. I bought an nos side cover so that I would have an example for my paint guy to match.

As far as the gold on the 71 GTR's, I've yet to find a name on a factory document for it. Was it still called Imperial Gold or something else?
