Neutral switch case bolts
« on: August 21, 2019, 12:16:43 PM »
I've mentioned in  previous posts how virtually every nut and bolt on the engine of my GTR has been mangled by the previous owner. The bolts for the neutral switch being no exception, as the original metric bolts were replaced with american bolts (arrgh!) Now I'll have to run a tap to (hopefully) restore the threads to accept new metric hardware. My question is: I know the bolts are 5mm, but what pitch? .8, .9 or?  Thanks in advance!

The original fasteners for the 350 neutral switch were screws, not bolts.

Per the parts manual, they are 5mm dia. x 18mm long and had a .9 pitch.

The following thread is great for those needing help with identifying the various fasteners BS used.......

GTR parts book shows these Phillips screws as being 18mm in length. Mr Megapack in the UK has them in a 20 mm length. So if I purchase a bag of ten, I suppose I'd have to take up the extra length with a plain washer, unless someone has a source for the original 18mm length?

Why not just order correct bolts from Richard?

Just grind off 2 mm. Or, possibly, there is room in the case for the extra 2 mm.

I'll see if Richard has them on hand, otherwise I'll grind down the 20mm ones. Thanks for all the imput!

I'll check if you can use the 20mm screws on the switch, tomorrow. You only need 3 if they have to  be cut down. Dead easy, takes minutes,  Junior hacksaw through, square up the end and put a small 45deg bevel on the cut threads.
But, buy a bag of 20off x 25mm, that way you will have 5mm  screws for the oil pump, right side cover and the air cleaner and a few spares.                      Brian

P.S.  Thanks Moonpup, good to know my ramblings are helpful to some.

Update,   20mm screws are fine with a couple of mm of thread depth beyond.

A buddy of mine had a 5mmX.9 tap, so I was able to chase the threads, and put in new screws. Thanks  Brian for the info on a bag of 20mm screws; do you get them from Mr. Megapack?

     Nysz1b,
Yes, Megapack in UK, only source I know of. Doesn't appear to be a similar supplier in the US..              But you want the 25mm length, just cut down as required.    Not a bad idea to buy a 5x0.9 and 4x0.75 tap yourself, they are not expensive. Widely available online.
