350 Parts Interchangeability

I started this topic for folks to discuss discoveries on parts interchangeablity.  Have you found a part from another bike that works as a replacement on the BS350?  Carbs, petcocks, paint, etc....

Here is the current list, collected and also seen on Scott Noga's site:

1. The fuel petcock from a 1975 Kawasaki Z1 (51023-055) is a close match to the 175/200 & 350.

2. An alternative petcock source is Harley Davidson up to about 1995.  Drag Specialties (makes aftermarket Harley parts) Part Number DS-390-218 (L-style petcock replacement for OEM part 62166-81.  This petcock is smaller than the BS stock part and is chromed so it makes a nice appearance. One difference is that it has one fuel outlet instead of two, so you have to use a "T" or "Y" connection to split the flow to two carbs.
 
3.Flamboyant Red paint is a close match with 1989 GM (General Motors) Brilliant Red Metallic, GM Code: 68, Dupont Code: B8947, base coat, clear coat.
   
4. Silver parts (fork tubes, etc.) have a close match in PPG Silver Poly #1435.

5. 350 ignition points interchange with Kawasaki A-1 and A-7, which all use Kokusan Denki alternators (EN-06, EN-09, EN-11)

6. Kawasaki KZ1000 ignition parts reportedly also fit the BS350:  Points, 21008-27, 21008-28; Condenser, 21013-035; Felt Brush, 21019-005.

7. NGK spark plug designations in the manuals that have an H suffix are equivalent to HS suffix.

8. Kawasaki A-1 and A-7 Mikuni VM26-SC carburetors are very similar too with many interchangeable parts

9. The Kawasaki F-7 speedometer cable (54001-032) will replace the 350 speedometer cable.

10. The Kawasaki H2 speedometer cable will replace the 350 tachometer cable.

11. The 22mm X 30mm X 5mm seal behind the dry clutch inner hub on the 350 can be substituted with a CR8503 or Suzuki Part Number 09283-22018 both of which are 1mm thinner but will work.

12. The 47mm X 60mm X 7mm seal behind the dry clutch on the 350 can be substituted with a CR18447.
   
13. Steering head ball bearings (38), and the clutch actuator rod ball bearing (1), are all standard 0.250"
   
14. The battery band for the 350 models is similar to the Kawasaki KE100, part number 92072-1044.

15. The large engine cushions for the 350 can be made by cutting in half Yamaha swing arm bushings, part #102-22123-00.

CafeTBird...thanks for the very useful info. Just a thought, you mentioned the '73 Kawasaki petrol tap but the part no you have listed is for a '75 Z1B. I would agree with you that the part no is correct and the one to go for...or possibly even the tap from a Z900A4 (51023-1021). These taps have an alloy finish and the appearance is much like the Bridgestones. Like all old taps though, there is the likelihood that they will leak but seal kits can still be bought.

On the other hand, the 1973/4 Z1/Z1A petrol taps are black, not only that, being the first of the Z1s, they usually sell for very high prices (one sold a couple of weeks ago on ebay for £137 / $205!! ....260321294975).

I bought the fuel petcock mentioned in item 2 of the original post, although I actually got the p/n ending in -219. It has a horizontal outlet of the fuel tube. Haven't fully fitted it on the tank yet - have to clean and probably coat the inside of it first. Unlike the original petcock, the Fatbook part only threads on about a 1/4 turn by finger before getting tight. I'm hoping the threads are a good match. Otherwise, the aftermarket part seems like a nice replacement. The original stand pipe for reserve broke off on mine years ago. It doesn't seem cheap or easy to find 5mm brass tubing to repair it. And the Fatbook part is made to filter the gas going thru both the "on" and "reserve" settings.

The Kawasaki parts are supposedly 22mm threads? Anyone know what the fuel tap threads are on a GTR? 1/4 turn does not sound like a good thread match...

Sorry, the Fatbook is the catalog of parts that Drag Specialty carries. I have a spare rusty old steel gas tank and the new fuel selector goes on one full turn by hand before getting snug. I went to a local Fastenal store hoping they'd have a 22mm nut in stock. They didn't. But they had a thread pitch gauge which makes it look like the tank and selector valve had the same threads. Maybe it's just a little too much chrome plating on the threads that will make for a snug fit?

I picked up a Custom Chrome petcock for a Harley (TU49-2873) - the threads look right, but there is a big gouge running up them that isn't allowing it to thread on.  I've ordered a replacement, so here's hoping!

O.K. - got the replacement.  I had to use an old tank to chase the threads a little on the new tap - chrome build up.  This thing works really good!

10. The Kawasaki H2 speedometer cable will replace the 350 tachometer cable.

Just a word of warning on this one - check the length of the cable before you buy. I just picked up a cheapie H1/H2 cable on Fleabay and it is far too short.  

The one I bought measures 820mm (32.25 inches) along the outer from spigot to spigot. The correct length for the BS 350 is 1050mm (41.3 inches)

I'll try to take photos soon and post them of the modifications required for the Drag Specialties petcock. It will work, but not right out of the package. The nice plastic fuel strainer that would filter both normal and reserve supplies is too big to fit inside the fuel tank outlet. So I'll be relying on an inline filter. And the top inside shoulder of the petcock had to be filed slightly smaller to fit inside the tank. Pictures will be worth more than words here....and as mentioned in my post earlier above, the threads were a little snug, but a big wrench worked fine with no damage done to fitting the tank.

Oh, can I assume that a non-chromed 350 gas tank is a GTO model? Funny thing is that the aftermarket petcock was only slightly more than a tight fit inside my spare metal tank, but wasn't really close to fitting inside my chromed tank. Guess tolerances varied a little during the production run.
