Points Cover Orientation
« on: May 22, 2019, 01:27:46 PM »
The lettering embossed on my points cover is upsides down. The two notches (for wires) on the cover and generator match up so it has to be installed upside down. Seems strange that it would have been manufactured that way.

Is this correct?

Thanks.

I'll have to take a look at my 350, but at first glance, it looks like the cover for the generator is installed upside down.  I'm pretty sure that the wires for the points should exit the frame with the rest of the generator wires, not through the notches on the edge of the frame.

Update:  There are no notches on my 350's generator frame.  The point wires exit through the same rubber grommet as the other generator wires.  350's aren't identical to the 175's, but I think they are the same in this area.

Jeff  and BS Mechanic are correct, it's upside down and the wires exit with the alternator wires. There were no notches for the points wires to exit past the cover. The cover is symmetrical and could be installed either way. The alternator housing has a  slotted tab at the crankcase end that uses a bolt to hold the radial position, not relying on the band.  That tab must be hidden at the lower front of the alternator in your installation.

Well, in the past, someone must have done it for some reason. Maybe the same guy that fashioned that Flintstone rectifier set-up it had.

Thanks

I would guess a previous owner, probably Mr Flinstone, has needed to renew the incoming wires to the points. Not wanting to pull the alternator off to route the wires through the case grommet, he took the easy way out and filed (chewed ?) a couple of grooves in the case. I might have done the same back in my youth when these were just old bikes that nobody wanted.

Unspoiled by progress.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!
