Wow Dave,
It is looking an awful lot better than it did when it left here. Great job, glad to see another old Bridgestone coming back to life. Keep posting photos.

Looking good Dave.  Is that a homemade frame stand your using?  Really like it too.

Having seen the high quality of some of Dave's other restorations - I am not surprised at how good the GTO is looking. Looks like a trophy winner at the next VJMC Rally in South Australia in 2013.

Well done Dave

Dave, just thought I'd toss this out there for you to consider. If you're as picky about details as I am, then you might want to consider changing the side panel emblems. The ones that you currently have are for the 1970 gold & chrome bikes, while the 1971 White GTO's came with these.....

Hi everyone I appreciate all the feed back on my GTO I'll try to answer some of the questions and maybe ask some of you guys:
My "U bute"bike stand is something I made up from an old Ford Disc rotor 350mm (14" for you guys across the pond) of 2" RHS tube a piece of 1/4" plate and 5 min's with the mig welder, hey presto a $3.00 stand.
The twist grip and switch block I not really sure I bought it from a guy in Holland and he said it was for a 350 and it has indicator switch but it was new and better than the one I didn't have. I like to see an original indicator.
Like most I'm in need of a right hand carbi cover, has anybody ever had one welded and how were the results I'm told that there is a high amount of magnesium in the alloy? and has anybody ever found source for the tool box or had a replica made?
I had my Pitt Replica seat cover fitted over new foam and a re finished seat base by a local trimmer, all in all it's very good although the printing is a little flaking  and the seat buttons are soft and mark quite easy, I'll take some photos if anyone is interested to see.

Dave.

Dave. As far as the right side cover and my experience, I would recommend you try repairing without welding unless you own a high frequency tig welding outfit. I'm not sure of any magnesium content, but I can tell you that aluminum wire will not work on magnesium and magnesium wire will not work on aluminum. The covers appear to be aluminum to me. I have a cover that was welded and ground and polished it as smooth as I could but there was a tremendous amount of visible porosity left. Also there is a definite visible discoloration of the metal in the weld area. I have another cover that I cold bent with a hammer and wood that finished much better. When grinding the welded cover if there had been any magnesium it would have shown in the characteristic fireworks display of sparks that ignite the magnesium dust in the area causing a small explosion. ;D Very cool if you ever have the opportunity to do this, just don't breath the toxic fumes. Check out "Right side cover-repairable?" in the forum
