shock cover removal
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:18:05 PM »
I would like to re chrome the shock covers on my Sport 90. Does anyone know if they are easy to remove once the shock comes off? Also does anyone know if there is a replacement available so that I would not have to pay a lot of money for re-chroming?

Search "90 rear shocks" in this forum. Disc_valve explains how to remove covers.

thanks, but now the 15mm open end wrench is too wide to get at the nut to loosen it. I cant find any tool that is so narrow to reach in where you have to loosen the nut.

Look for a thin wrench at a tool store, they are available.  You may have to order something on-line.  As an alternative, you can just grind down a standard wrench.  If you don't want to damage one that's part of a set, go buy a cheap one; "Tool Shop" brand at Menards or something at Harbor Freight if one is close and grind away on it.

You read my mind Oldswartout. The thing about grinding a standard wrench down for areas like this is you can just grind it and leave a maximum thickness that's stronger than a purchased wrench provided you don't let it get too hot. I buy good quality wrenches cheap at flea markets to modify.

In Oz 'Push bike' is another name for a bicycle. Also known as a 'pushy'

PS - BSA also used to stand for 'Breaks down and Stops Anywhere' or ' Bloody Sore Arse'

Wow, I was thinking the same thing about grinding one down. I found an old cheap 15mm wrench I had bought for a spare tool kit for my daughters ATV and was about to grind it, but then decided to take off my front tire on my Honda Pacific Coast motorcycle because I wanted to get that going first. Thanks Steve for the offer of sending them down to you. Thats very generous!!! Do you know how to refinish the chrome? I want the chrome to look like new again. My muffler is at Browns right now but there must be someplace that can do just as nice for less???

Hap, just remember, you get what you pay for.  Not all chrome is equal.

All goes on looking good.  One of the problems with cheap chrome is how long it will stay on.

Quality of the finish also varies.  Very easy to spot when you compare them side by side.

Read up on it before you dive in.

Hap,
I would leave the exhaust with Browns, they did Richards exhausts on his GTR and did a very nice job!
Thanks.
Steve.

Steve,

Browns is plating my muffler and frame brace right now as I write. Shall I send you the two shocks to disassemble? Would you then ship the covers to Browns and then reassemble them and ship them back together and ready to go to me? I would rather have you reassemble with more experience. I would probably mar up my brand new finish! Of course I would pay you for all the shipping costs to Browns and back to me. I would pay for the chroming at Browns with a Credit Card over the phone just like I did with the muffler. You would just need to ship covers to Browns and have them returned to you by Browns and then reassemble and ship back to me. Let me know, they are off the bike and just sitting on my workbench.

I'll say!!! Steve cleaned out my carb for free on my Sport 90 after it was sitting for years and when I put it back on, the little bike spurted to life!

Steve, please send me an email with your address and I will get the shocks in the mail.
