Contact Points/Condensors
« on: June 01, 2014, 11:47:34 PM »
If i could get through this puzzler, i will be a happy camper for sure. I had installed a new points/condensors in my GTR, but for some reason, using a continuity tester, one of the points when they are in 'open' position has the tester light up ( open or closed, doesn't make any difference)...the other points/condensor is just the opposite( the continuity is broken and the light goes off in the 'open' postion on those points. Which is the correct version? ( i had to replace a wire to the points when i was using direct positive juice from the battery)  :-[

It's reasonably easy to get the assembly of the small bolt, washers and spacers wrong where the wire connects to the points. I've messed it up a few times. Some things I've found: the wire connector may be on the wrong side of an insulator and be contacting the metal of the point base, the small ring insulator that goes around the bolt where it goes through the point base may be missing and the bolt is against the metal, or the wire connector may be turned so that it is contacting the point mounting plate or some other item that is grounded.

Thanks for the reply Karl. It was a grounding problem afterall, however, the grounding was not on the wire going to the points connection with the problem. I traced the problem to the coil, i had one coil wired correctly on the positive and negative connections on it, but the other coil that had the problem concerning the points, i actually had it wired wrong.....i switched the wires on that coil. I wasn't paying close enough attention to that detail which really set me back a few days. Once again, thanks for the reply Karl. bsforever
