GTR Throttle Cable Hookup
« on: September 04, 2013, 10:58:04 PM »
I know this sounds very basic, but i did a search on this site for the throttle cable hookup on the carbs with no info found for what i am looking for. Where does the cable go where the spring for the slide is.......... on the outside of the slide spring or inside of the spring? ( I have them on the outside...but not sure if it is correct this way?) Thanks

Cable goes outside the spring and into the slide through the slot in the bottom.

Can you post a picture of how you've got it routed?

Thanks for the response BS Mechanic....yes, that is the way i have it hooked up as described, the reason i asked the question is when i turn the throttle grip and forward again....the carb slides go back downward slowly and not fast like they should. Could be not enough tension on the springs? Should i take them apart and stretch out the springs a little for more tension? ( before i put the carbs on , they would work as they should when i lifted the slide and released with my finger....problem started when i put the carbs on and hooked the cables up ) If i need to take it apart i can post a pic of the routing this weekend. thanks again BS Mechanic.

I wouldn't mess with the springs.  If the slides do go shut by themselves with the cables, and the slides snap shut easily without the cables hooked up, it's probably just friction in the cables and grip.  Sometimes you can help this by experimenting with different cable routing through the frame.  Make sure there's no hangup at the grip, and check the lube on the throttle mechanism at the handlebar.  Heavy grease can slow things up.

This is seldom an issue when the bike is running.  All it takes is a bit of vacuum on the slides and vibration from running and everything will probably work just fine.  I'd try it running first before worrying much if they close by themselves.

Another possibility is something I posted happening to me a few years ago.
After putting the carbs back on one slide had some binding (not snapping back down quickly).
I realized that I had tightened the nut on the outside of the carb throat a little too tight onto the intake tube and was enough to cause the venturi tube to deform making the slide seem "sticky".
Just loosening the nut a fraction of a turn made the problem go away.
Maybe this is your problem???

Problem solved...thanks old smokey!!  Could have been some of the suggestions that BS Mechanic stated, fortunately for my case it was the 'easy fix' to back off the carb mounting screws. Hope this thread will be used as a reference for others with the same problem in the future to resolve this puzzle issue for them. Thanks again guys!      bsforever

That's great to hear.
I had thought tighter was better for no air leaks or parts vibrating loose, but not in this case.
