Anyone interested in performan pipes?
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:05:22 AM »
I was curious if anyone would be interested in performance exhausts for these bikes, any bike really, I am getting a set fabricated for my 175dt and I allready have a pipe for my 1978 puch maxi, I know it's a moped but, it had a 74cc big bore kit, a 24m mikuni and before one if these pipes I dynoed 7 horse at around 10k rpms and after I got 13hp and I revv out to 15k, so just imagine what it will do with over twice the engine! Each pipe is built an designed for the specific bike and custom to the port map of said bike, I'll let you know what my gains are but rough esitmates are that it will put my 175 over 32 horse. Im trying to gauge interest to see if it's something we wanna go ahead with

Also a pipe can be built for any model bridgestone, we just need a frame to mock it up to, seeing as I only own a 175 dt, that's all we can make them for, but if you had another bike you wanted to have one built for, it is possible

I am definitely interested. I'd like to know specifically what they might cost.

hi guys, I'm pretty new on here. I have a dt175 that I'd like to make into a race bike. I would definitely be interested in performance pipes!. I have a little brochure on modifying the  disc vlave and skimming the head for better performance. Anyone on this board race a BS? I read the factory production racer story posted on here and it was great. I'm a brit bike guy so the world of little two strokes pushing such high revs and insane amounts of gearing is all new to me. The big upgrade on a triumph is 5 speed (from a 4).

Hi Paul
have any pictures of you racer? I'd love to see it! What are some of the mods you did to the motor or is it pretty stock? I have a few friends that know quite a bit about two stroke racers from the 60's, so I was going to strip the bike down, take the motor over to them, and see where we can pull some more HP. This is strictly a "fun" project, with the ultimate goal to try some track days next season. Do you guys have oil injection or if you did, did you remove it and pre mix? Any info would be appreciated.

I am at the beach right now, but I will be returning home this afternoon. I'll try to get some pictures pulled together.

Hi Matt,

I have a SR175 motor in a standard frame that has been modified for road race. Here's a list of some of the changes.

Kawasaki A1 Mikuni 22mm carbs
Suzuki RM85 Wiseco pistons
Custom Expansion chambers
Cylinders Nikasil plated (Millenium Technologies)
Custom Works Performance shocks
Ceriani 32mm forks
Custom Alloy racing tank and fiberglass racing seat
Flanged Alloy rims WM1 front WM2 rear
Bridgestone BT39SS racing tires
Various CDI ignitions, but currently running a dead loss points setup for SR175
Honda CB450 Black Bomber front hub with stock 175/350 Bridgestone rear hub

Paul, what gearing do you use on larger tracks.

Hey Jimmy,

The transmission ratios aren't that great. On a real short track I can run a 13-43/44. On some of the big tracks 14-39/40. The bike has had problems over the last few years and I don't have any good feedback. Gearing on these things is very critical. I have gears from 12-18 for the front and 34-44 for the rear and never seem to vary much from what I listed. I do have short pipes which  makes for a narrow powerband.

thanks for the pics. Do you find that the Honda front brake is far superior than the stock tls brake?

Hey Matt,

the stock Bridgestone front brake worked amazingly great with properly lined shoes. However when I really started to push the bike more at Barber one year the front hub broke. This was due to maching the hub for the ceriani forks and the casting became too thin. I had the honda hub already machined and it has more meat on that side. I had the Bridgestone back plate repaired but never used it again (i have more stories about loss of front brakes in race conditions). The Honda front end stops very well and I can't say that I've ever had any issues with not being able to apply as hard as possible with no fade. The Honda hub is 40 hole but I think a CL77 scrambler has the same size hub but 36 hole.

cool, thanks for the insight. My BS build is going to be a bit of a long term process. First I'm going to get it running well and get it on the road to get the feel of a smaller bike (I ride a Triumph hinckley bonnie). Then I want to start doing some mods to the engine and eventually get it ready for some track days to test it out. I do have a couple of 2-stroke expert friends who can help me with the mods as I want them to be done right.

Hey Jimmy,

the 14-16 are BS NOS,  Richard or Certified should have. I don't remember what rears are available but I got the 34-36 (which by the way are too small for the hub) from Sprocket Specialists and the 37,39, 41, 43 and 44 from PBI (chris products). They are cheaper than Sprocket Specialists and they have the pattern. Do you have a 4 bolt sprocket carrier or 6 bolt? I use the 6 bolt but I think Karl uses the 4 bolt style.
