66 dt 175 runs on right side only
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:43:06 PM »
My dt 175 is not running properly, the right cylinder runs great but the left will only run on ether. I have traded carbs and coils in an attempt to isolate the problem but I haven't had any success. I'm lead to think that the issue is internal however if u have any knowledge as to whether these symptoms could be caused by a common problem please let me know. Any help at all will be greatly appriciated.
P.S. I also replaced both points and condensors.

Another potential electrical issue would be the coil/plug wire.  You can flip them around to test.  Swap lead wires from points/condenser and flip the plug wires around.  You may already have done that but it's something we've seen as a potential solution.  It never hurts to swap the plugs around too... I've learned that lesson more than once.  Oh, and even another thing... if charging is an issue, it will affect one side first (at least on my 200 that is the case... my left cylinder suffers first).

BTW, I have an extra coil pack that is functional if that happens to be the problem.  It's from my 200 might work so if you need it, I can send it to you.   Just check the parts manual to verify compatibility.

If the plugs are good try a compression test to see what compression is on that cylinder.
If you go to, back to basics in the forum it will tell you how to do a compression test etc.
And go from there.
Thanks.
Steve.

Hi
I had a similar problem with a 90 carb.  It was well stuck - I carefully drilled a hole in the plunger and removed it using an 'easy out' reverse thread that fitted the drilled hole.  Make sure that you don't damage the bore.  Luckily I had a spare plunger.

Good luck

Good the hear you got that plunger out Ray.

For some stupid reason I had never thought to use heat when trying to remove stuck carb slides and stuck chokes. I always just soaked them until they finally came out or used a little GENTLE persuasion. Anyway I had 2 stuck slides last week and I soaked them for a little while but then got impatient. The heat gun was sitting there and it dawned on me to heat up the carb to warm up that 20 year old gas that had turned into concrete maple syrup. Not more than a minute later that slide came right out.

SO - try soaking the whole carb in some carb cleaner, make sure no rubber parts in there. Then try a little heat. Maybe even a hairdrier? if you don't have one of those heat guns.

I still can't believe I hadn't thought of this a long time ago.

If you can not remove the choke plunger send the carb to me and i will pop in the ultrasonic tank and remove the choke plunger
For you at no charge just pay the shipping etc.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Steve.

Dpkdino,I don't think you can beat Reeds carb service, but Scrambler and I do think a bit alike. If you read back through the posts on stuck stuff, you'll see I often recommend a little heat, and I like to boil things,(or soak in boiling water). You do have to be careful with plastics etc.,but I have yet to damage anything by boiling. It works on lots of stuck, varnished stuff. Good luck.  Mark.
