Title: engine lubrication Dual Twin 175
Post by: mistamax on March 06, 2018, 01:09:48 AM
Hi all,new to this site,be glad of some advice.
Picked up this old bike a few years ago,not running ,just fitted new coils and wiring, thought I might see if it would go.put some premixed fuel in it as I have not tested the injector pump, after 20 or so kicks it came to life, seems to run ok ,surprising as it hasn't been started for over 20 years, woo hoo.
My question is,is it ok to run it on premix, the oil tank is empty but still connected.I thought I read somewhere that the injector pump feeds oil to other internal parts of the engine for lubrication,if this is the case they would not be being lubricated if I was only running premix.I think I would prefer to run premix as this guards against failure of the injector pump, but concerned that it may be detrimental to the engine if I am bypassing necessary lubrication by doing so.Appreciate any advice on this matter, this bike is a bit of a roughy which is endearing, pretty rare here in Australia, most people have never heard of them,or seen one.Now that I know it goes I can work towards getting it on the road again, not as an original, lends itself toward cafe racer styling I think,Anyway hope someone may be able to help with this question, thankyou Barry

The injection pump only feeds oil to nozzles in the intake stream just past the carburetors, so premix does the same job of oiling the internals.  FWIW, I've never heard of an injection pump failure, personally, I think it's very reliable and you don't have to worry about carrying oil for a fuel fill-up when going for a ride.

Thanks  Karl that's great, appreciate your advice on this, may now do a test to see that the pump is feeding through the black pipes, your confidence in this system is inspiring, maybe I don't need to worry about its reliability, certainly,as you say, easier than carrying oil around and mixing at the service station, anyway thanks again and thanks to this site for the opportunity to understand this unique little bike, regards Barry
