Oil leak and splatter
« on: July 13, 2012, 04:56:45 PM »
I would like to revive this thread:
Another GTO back on the road...
« Reply #8 on: April 23, 2012, 09:07:21 AM »

The one problem I have and hopefully it's only temporary...oil is leaking from the exhaust gaskets and the joint between the headers and silencers, so my fairly short ride on Saturday resulted in about an hour of cleaning the intricate parts of the engine of oil splatter...not to mention my boots! This is probably from when the bike has been started and left idling a number of times, when doing a bit of fine tuning...I'm hoping it will seal itself soon......
Steve

I still get enough oil into my my exhaust system to produce a significant amount of soot that collects on the back fender and my back.  I thought that I might have overfilled the transmission, today I drained about 1.0+ L out and added 1.5 L of fresh oil.  The oil level had not yet reached the sight gauge so I was surprised at the amount of oil that I drained out.  I assume that could be where the oil in the exhaust system is originating.

I also have oil spray at the header / muffler joint.

Does anyone else have soot coming out of their exhaust?

Is the oil in the exhaust system just a problem because of the spray at the header joint?

Is this just a problem because of the high pipes on the GTO?

Any recommendations discussion?

Thanks.

regards charlie

Charlie,
Do you use a lot of two stroke oil in your gto!
Check your adjustment of your oil pump.
You might be using to much oil and the oil
Is building up in your exhaust after you adjust
The oil pump take the motor cycle for a good
Long run etc.
Thanks.
Steve.

Would this be a good candidate for a leak down/seal test? Looks like the trans oil has dissapeared? Did it go thru the motor and out the exhaust? Just a thought.  Mark.

I set the oil pump to specs using the marks on the carburetor slides as described in the shop manual.  I have since reset the pump to inject less oil, but am very cautious not to back off to much.

I will also try a longer ride to burn them out.  Even the 20 mile ride that I took yesterday the pipes were very hot on my legs through my levis.

It doesn't seem to be using an excessive amount of injector oil.

No header leaks.

I too suspect that the oil might be coming from the transmission, because there was .25 to .5 L unaccounted for when I changed the oil.

What is a leak down seal test?

Thanks for all your comments.

Sorry, it should have read more like leakdown test/seal check. Reed put a picture of his tester on here recently. Just put leakdown tester in the search and it should come right up. Without getting too technical, you can check for an internal leak from the tranny by draining it with the bike upright overnight and then refilling with a measured amount. Run it a bit (might take longer than 20 miles),and let it sit again in the same position overnight to drain. If there is significantly less oil and no visible outward leaks, its sucking it thru. Right side rotary cover seal or O-ring would be the first suspicion, maybe a center case leak.  Mark.

Charlie,
If you suspect its gearbox oil you will need to replace these parts  o-ring part number 09066-121 oil seal part number 09090-118.
Crank case cover gasket part number 2183-9000. this is for the right side etc, so do this first and run the motor and check the oil.
Thanks.
Steve.

Coxy:
No, it is fairly thick.  It will blow into runs but will not run by itself.
