Fuel Petcock Rebuild Success
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:56:20 AM »
Hoping to give something back to this forum...

Shortly after purchasing my RS200-MII in 2008, I realized the fuel petcock was toast.  I couldn't find a kit, didn't see the point in buying a new (old) one from R.C., and attempted to use the Harley exchange petcock (it didn't fit).  I realized that I could have had new threads cut into the tank but I'm sort of a purist (it's my problem).  In the end, I beefed up my gasket sheet stock, played around with a few types and thicknesses and cut/drilled my own replacements.  I checked it out yesterday and the petcock is working as required.

Tips: If you have a leather punch appropriately sized, it would probably be easier then drilling and cleaning out the three holes.  Also, I would recommend making the holes slightly larger.  The holes will shrink from the compression of screwing the retainer on.  That was my experience anyway.

It's an alternative fix for those of you who have the patience and the purist gene.

Have a good one.

I found some sheet cork gasket material. Works great and though it has only been in use for about 10 mos. it is working well. Flows gas as it should and turns off and on as it should.

Just curious, what type and thickness of gasket material seems to work best for rebuilding the 175/200 petcocks?  Thanks!

I'm rebuilding a one myself but couldn't tell what kind of material was originally behind the valve (the part you turn) it looks like cork but after 40 years I can't tell for sure. The bottom base where the straws go into had some serious pitting it looked like white chalk. After removing it I noticed the longest straw has come off but it fits back into the hole perfectly and the shorter one used to have a fine mesh netting extention soldered to it.
What kind of material should be used for the gaskettes?

Napa auto has a gasket kit, (P/N FPG 3060), that has a cork-rubber material that works great for the fuel valve. McMaster-Carr has brass woven wire cloth 100X100 (P/N 9223T146) that works great for the reserve tube and 1" stainless disc 100X100 (P/N 9317T555) that works great for the bowl strainer. Hobby stores have K&S brass tubing for the fuel tubes.

Scroll down slightly to "Mesh Size Range".
On the far right you'll see "Fine Mesh".
Click on that and it will take you to another page.
Scroll down toward the bottom of the page and you'll see P/N 9223T146 first in the list of choices available.

Sorry I can't give you a direct link.
When I tried to link directly with then URL given for that page, I get no data.
Something goofy going on with that......... ::)
