175 HS running rough
« on: May 31, 2013, 02:10:47 PM »
We bought a '68 175 HS last week as a starter bike for my wife.  I took it for a test ride 'around the block' and it shifted and accelerated as I would expect. I rode it home on the freeway about 40 miles.
Now this beautiful bike has 3 major mechanical issues:

The first concern I had was that I could only do 60ish MPH in 5th with the throttle wide open.

The second issue is that there is an oil leak which seems to collect around the center stand on the bottom right side. Not sure of the source.

The final problem is that after a few days of running short errands the bike began running very rough.  Poor acceleration in 1st gear followed by sudden bursts of speed.  The last time I had it out it would only get up to about 10mph max and now when I start the bike as soon as I put it in gear and release the clutch it stalls out.

I know that's a lot ...but my wife is dying to ride her new bike and now it's not safe to take out on the road.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know the 175s well, but I would guess the HS has different sprocket teeth counts than the DT. Maybe the HS should do well over 60, but the DT sprockets would probably help if only used for roads.

For poor running now, my first guess might be fuel contamination. Had the bike been sitting prior to you getting it? Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Others can probably offer better troubleshooting advice. Are there any fuel filters on it now?

I agree with Smokey about the fuel. I always like to clean the carbs and put a tune up on one with new points and plugs before I look for any problems. Cleanin your tank and whole fuel system is a good idea on a new bike. No tellin how much water or trash is in it or how old the fuel is.

I have an HS rear sprocket sitting next to a DT one and there is quite a difference so I could see 60 being around a normal top speed.
