CRANKSHAFT TALK.
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:17:29 PM »
Crankshaft talk.
I just just finished Harry's Bridgestone GTR engine a full rebuild.
Plus part gearbox,The problem we had the threads on the end
Of the crank were very badly worn so we were very lucky when
Harry found one on E bay, So my question is what do we do when
Crankshafts run out! When you press a crankshaft apart you can
not use the connecting rods crank pins needle bearings again.
Now if we have the con rod kits we can rebuild the crankshaft
With new connecting rods crank pins needle bearings labyrinth
packing and the o ring plus all four bearings then set the crankshaft
UP done, plus we get the piston small end bearings part number
1333-9000 this is a great deal we have to make it happen! it
could lead to other projects like carb covers clutch plates.
Thanks.
Steve.

Hi All,

I hope everyone is listening to what Steve has posted. If we don't get this crankshaft project off the ground, it will not be long before fresh engines will be a thing of the past. You can't make one of these engines usable for more than a display item if the rod  bearing are not up to snuff. The engines will shortly self destruct if they are put on the road for a nice ride with old rusty previously locked up bearings or pitted pins. We are lucky to have Steve and a few others who can tru-up a crankshaft and make it reliable. But that can only happen with good parts. There are still some lower end bearings around but no rods. It would be a shame if we can not eventually save a good many of our 350's. Unfortunately all the small end bearings were thrown out instead of being reused when they were fairly new just because a piston was changed and the bearings were available. Now we are all looking for usable small end bearings. Please everyone listen and get on board with Ray and Richard on this project so we can continue to build good engines. Church is over that's my sermon for tonight.
Thanks Mike

This is one of my spare crankshaft for my Bridgestone GTR 350.
Which i keep for emergency just in case if your crankshaft
Goes, where to get the parts to repair the crankshaft?
If you own a GTR or a GTO and keeping the motorcycle this
Is good insurance lets get the CON ROD KITS GOING!!and
Into production. the crankshaft in the picture is not for sale.
And i did put my name down for a con rod kit.
Thanks.
Steve.

Hi Steve,
I wish mine was like that with a new set of unobtainable small end bearings. What a nice part to have on the shelf. Hopefully everyone who intends to keep there 350's will get on board so we can all have parts to complete such a piece.
Later Mike

Steve,

In your first post you say as below.........

'When you press a crankshaft apart you can
not reuse the connecting rods, crank pins and needle bearings again'.

Why is this Steve, what happens?

Lee,
When i was a younger man i did a lot of work on the Suzuki and Yamaha trail bikes crank work engine work etc.
You would get a con rod kit take the engine apart press the crankshaft apart fit new big end bearing and set it
Up etc.In the workshop we had a Yamaha DT 125 at about 50 mph there was a vibration on the foot pegs.
So i took the engine out of the frame striped the engine down pressed the crankshaft apart come to find that the
Con rod was missing out of the kit it had been delivered that way so when ahead and put the new big end bearing in
Got it all together built the engine ran the engine at no more than 40 mph it lasted for about 100 miles the big end
Exploded all the bearing parts found there way up to the cylinder and piston all that work because the con rod had
Stretched in the bearing housing, so i will never rebuild a crankshaft without  a new con rods and bearings.
A big lesson learned you cannot get them right all the time however good you think you are.
Thanks.
Steve.

Right Steve you've convinced me, I've put my name on the list, better to be safe than sorry.

A question, Is there no thrust bearings on the crank either side of the big end, can't see any in the parts manual?

Also I was wondering if you and any other engine builders/suppliers are going to have con rod sets sat on the shelf and sell at a premium later on? This commitment could help those who can't justify ordering a set just now.

Lee

The thrust washers are reused, your crank builder will just set up the rebuilt crank to same spec.
Keep in mind the thrust controls side to side movement, really nothing to go bad.

Some have these distance washers some do not.

Hope this helps

Hello all,

Has anyone got a crank with knackered rods and bearings that they would be willing to part with. Something I could use with one of these new conrod kits.

Harvey.

Harvey

If you do not turn one from this group, I most likely can supply on, once I get a few parts engines torn down.
