Bypass of ignition switch
« on: September 29, 2010, 11:57:55 PM »
I am going to look at a 1968 BS175 in a couple of days.  There are no ignition keys for it so the wires were clipped at the switch.  The current owner took the bike in as a repayment of dept and says the previous guy started it for him but he did not pay attention on how to connect the wires.  I would like to start it as I don't want to buy something on blind faith.  The problem is that there are six wires going to the switch that were clipped and need to be put together in some type of order.  Which colors should be connected together?  Oh and the battery is dead, is that going to be a problem?
Thanks - Jason

I did read that last night, which I was excited about, and I will go that route for sure if I buy the bike.  Unfortunately this bike is 5 hours away and I am only looking at it because I am going to a wedding in the area.  Any help with this temporary solution would help me feel easier about getting in the Bridgestone club.

Jason, this question pops up from time to time. There is a general reluctance to give specific instructions on how to "hot wire" these bikes. To do a proper check on the electrical systems, you should have a good battery. For reinstalling the switch, you can find the wiring schematics for this bike in the service manual under the downloads section of this site. Make sure the current owner/possessor of the bike will provide documentation or title to back things up. Good luck,Mark.

I understand from the legal standpoint on "hot wiring" is not something you would want to openly share.  I hope you would believe that I would not be stupid enough to try to steal a $250 motorcycle. This guy does have the title but the fact that he cannot remember which of the 6 wires need to be connected leads me believe that the thing does not run.  My email address is snoose37@yahoo.com

Just want you to excercise caution Jason.. Sounds like a deal at $250 for bike and title alone. If it runs for you, thats a plus. These bikes are pretty straight forward and easy to work on. Unless this bike is in horrendous rusted condition,(look inside gas tank for example),my opinion would be you can't go wrong considering the price. Check your pers.mail. Thanks,Mark.
