Index marks on engine reassembly
« on: January 12, 2011, 07:00:26 PM »
Hi all,

I am reassembling my 350 after an unfortunate incident involving the wrong sparkplugs and a ventilated piston. (The bore is fine, but I split the cases to clean out all the debris.) I also took the opportunity to have the alternator repaired as it was only producing current on two phases. Fixed now (apparently, I still have to pick it up).

I have been following the instructions in the service manual for reassembly and am running through in my head how the gears go back together for when I get the alternator back. There are index marks on the timing gear (on the alternator shaft) and on the driven gear (the big one in behind the clutch), however there is no keyway on the end of the crank. This means that the drive pinion can go onto the crankshaft at any position. There are no index marks on the end of the crank either. Hmmm, perhaps I should have made one with a centrepunch when I took it apart...

I'm guessing that the crank should be placed in the position for setting the timing (using the timing tool or suitable substitute) and then everything else should be lined up using the index marks, but that really is just a guess.

Can anyone confirm this? Tricks? Hints? Tips?

Thanks!

The index mark lines up with the hole where the dowel goes in part number 09056-102 .
So look at the end the crankshaft and put a center punch mark and line it up with the
Hole for the dowel. Then the drive pinion gear lines up with the center mark on the end
Of the crankshaft.
Thanks.
