Title: Kick Start Shaft - BS 50 Sport

HI All

I've got my '67 BS 50 almost completely stripped now. The external spline end is broken off my kick start shaft. I can probably lay hands on a 90 shaft. Does anyone know if the 90 part is interchangeable?

Richard Clark has that shaft too as I got one last year  a for the newer version, as its stronger Jeff Bar

Hi, Jeff,

For the record, the 50 Sport kickstart shaft is identical to the 90 shaft. The kickstart pinion on the 50 Sport is smaller, but that just pulls off the shaft. I had the same problem when I restored my 50 Sport, and I had a spare 90 shaft in my bits box so I tried it - and it works.

I found the Manuals and Parts Manuals on the site. According to them the 50, 60 and 90 all have the same part number. Interestingly my old shaft has NO circlip groove (see pic attached) and Ray's pic shows one with a single groove. The 50/60 parts catalogue page 25 shows the shaft with 2 grooves but doesn't show any clips in the exploded view. The BS Tech Handbook manual makes reference to removing a circlip from the kick shaft when disassembling the motor (Page 16 sect 4.2.B.21). The Clymer Manual makes no reference to it. I assume these were just year model variations, but how important is that clip?

If I get a shaft with a groove/s do I just ignore the circlip?

I've also attached some pics of my old piston. Looked a lot worse, but its been cleaned up a bit. No play on the pin. Does it look re-useable or do you think its junk?

A soon as I've referenced part numbers, I'll post a wish list of bits that I need/want.

I think that is what Jeff Bar was talking about make sure you get the latest version of the shaft.  Again I think Richard has them

hi piston looks a little ruff , at the base of the piston skirt on the last picture it looks as if the piston has had excessive piston to cyclinder wall clearance , looks as if piston has been slapping the cyclinder walls as it made its stroke , if you have a mic. i would measure the piston at the base of the skirt , an check the wear on the bore of the cyclinder to see how much clearance there is an if there is excessive wear on the piston an cyclinder , you should find the tolarances for the piston an cyclinder in the manuals , thanks william Anderson
