350 race bike build ignition advice please
« on: June 20, 2014, 06:40:09 AM »
Hi all. I am currently building a 350 race bike and would like to know if anyone has any experience fitting an aftermarket ignition system to there 350 and if so what system it was. Any other mods, advice appreciated. Thank you

In my opinion, use a Dyna S ignition.  It is relatively easy to adapt, will give good spark and is reliable.  I put one on my 175 road racer and got one a couple weeks ago to put on my 350, but it's still on the workbench.  You can buy them used on ebay for less than $100 or new for about $150.  It consists of a rotor with magnet for a trigger and a couple of pickups.  You can use stock coils, or if you want to spend a little more money, buy the Dyna coils.  My brother has run one on his Kawasaki A1 road racer for years. There are various models, but all consist of one or two pickups and the trigger rotor, the main variation being the mounting plate. You will need two pickups, of course.  I buy used systems for a Kawasaki KZ1000; there seems to be a lot of those out there that were used on drag bikes and are now being parted out (the KZ1000's must be getting scarce). You can modify the mounting plate on the one you buy or transfer the pickups to the Bridgestone points mounting plate with the addition of 4 screw holes.

There's a photo and brief explanation of the conversion of my 175 at:

I'll be doing the conversion on my 350 shortly, I'll take photos as I go.

I finally put together a writeup on installing the Dyna S ignition on my 350. It's in the How To section of this forum. I placed it there as it really applies to 175 & 200's also.  Check it out.

Have had great results using a Pazon (New Zealand) unit designed for an Ariel Leader 2-stroke twin. Easily fitted needing only a simple mounting plate and modification to the rotor.

That Pazon ignition looks like an easy conversion, too, and the cost is pretty comparable to buying a new Dyna S. It looks like it has the same situation with wiring - it needs three dedicated wires from the trigger plate through the harness to under the seat instead of the two the points required.  Do you just use the ground wire that's in the harness as the third wire?  Do you add a substitute ground wire external to the alternator harness?

I noticed Pazon currently has free shipping for most items over $150 NZ, so no worries about shipping to the US.
