Other brand 19" front tire, disc brake, spoke rim
« on: October 23, 2011, 12:50:33 PM »
So far input has provided the Kawasaki H1 & H2 as well as the Suzuki GT500 as having the subject combination.
Yesterday I found that it seems a 1974 Yamaha XS500 also has that 19" tire, disc brake and spoke rim.
The interesting part about the XS500 is that my father has one sitting in his barn since the mid 80s with a non-running engine. My brother and I bought him a complete gasket rebuild kit in the late 80s.
He never did anything with it and the gasket kit is probably rotting away in some outbuilding now.
He mentions the valves are stuck in the head.
If dimensions work, I think it could be the donor to my GTR rebuild.

If other suggestions for 19" front tire, disc brake and spoke rims combinations are believed to exist, feel free to add to this thread.

if the xs500 is anything like my old xs650 the brakes were relatively poor even with a modern master cylinder  .

I agree with you that front brake on the xs500 and xs 650 was not up to much!
Plus any rain on the discs no brakes at all!!
Thanks.
Steve.

I rode an XS650 for a few years, didn't really notice the brakes being sub-par.  I probably never rode it it the rain, though. It weighed about 110 pounds more than a BS 350, so the brakes would work better installed on a BS. A drilled disc would help the stopping in the rain situation, I think.

I'm not really needing to get braking a lot stronger than the original front drum, but since everything up front needs to be replaced anyway - I'm just over the long term goal of getting it back to show room new.
On Monday a co-worker took his Honda 750 Shadow out for one last ride before winterizing it.
Because his battery was near dead it needed a charge and didn't get running until after dark.
He said he had a feeling it was going to happen when he saw the car and while on a city street doing maybe 25 mph a lady pulled out from a side street in front of him. He laid it down and came to rest about 6 ft from the car door. The lady stepped out of the car and said she was sorry- it was her fault.
His right side is sore and bruised, but nothing broken.
The Shadow is at the local Honda dealer for repairs. Hopefully the car driver pays. They did have a cop show up at the scene. ::)

Now I also see that an even a 1980 CB650 has the 19" spoke rim with disc brake.
And again, my dad also has one sitting in his barn with no title.
Of the three bikes he has, a BS175, Yamaha XS500 and CB650, 2 of those have 19" front wheels.

The easiest swap might be to do the entire front end including the triple trees. With the right combination of upper and lower steering bearings you might be able to find something that bolts right up. I've done similar swaps before but not on the BS350.

My dad checked and it sounds like the front tube of the Honda CB650 is the same length, so now I need to check the tube diameter and see if that is also similar.....
I would like to swap out the whole front assembly if possible.
That would also get me one step closer to adding turn signals.
