cheap stubborn me
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:57:00 PM »
My GTR ran great several weekends ago and I even got to run a tank of non-ethanol fuel through it. Then 2 miles after being stuck putting ethanol fuel in (E10 variety) it started running poorly. Tonight I took the carb covers off for a test ride. I didn't even get it in first gear and could see fuel dripping out of the left carb. Sure enough, one of the floats has a small leak in it. I drained it out and put a little JB weld around the seams of it hoping to enjoy some of the great fall weather this week. Tomorrow night I'll see if it really floats again.

Old Smokey,
Good luck with the float!  I sympathize with the need to get some riding in while the weather's cooperating!

I had one of my floats break loose from the bracket 800 miles from home in the black hills. Tried re-soldering it using a spare spark plug heated in campfile for a soldering iron.  That was a complete failure, so I tied it back on with some monofiliment fishing line I found.  That held till about 60 miles from home.  Made it the last 60 miles by using the petcock to sort of "adjust" the float level; one hand on the throttle, one on the petcock.

that's a bit of bad luck on both accounts and a bit of bush mechanics to hope you caught some fish. don't you guys in the states have a choice of fuel? here we have e10 +90+95+98 at most gas stations

I'm living in a rural area so a few gas stations have no-ethanol choices for one or two octane ratings. Most larger cities in the US are almost strictly E-10 only for all octanes.
