GTR skill and knowledge time
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:08:38 PM »
First, some background.

I seized a piston on my GTR, got it apart, nicasil barrel is OK, and installed new pistons from Richard.

Trying to get it assembled,  uhh -read the instructions, right? ;D

Here are the questions.  Based on assumption that the "right side" is on the right when seated on the bike.

1. The manual says to connect the oil line on the outside (left side) of the oil pump to the RIGHT side of the engine. Is this correct??
2. If the lines are connected opposite way, is there a KNOWN problem? ???

My lines were reversed, but I rode the bike about 300 miles, highway and urban speeds, with no problem till it seized one piston.
I'm trying to pinpoint the cause, as I don't want another sudden stop. ::)
Check valves seem OK, and I am setting the oil pump cable a little higher.

Any help would be appreciated, as I am about to fire it up.

I just checked on my GTR.
The oil output line from the back left side of oil pump (hidden behind oil pump when installed) goes to the left cylinder (opposite side of bike).
The oil outlet on the outside towards the front right side of the oil pump goes to the right cylinder (shorter oil line).
No guarantee, but that is how it's been since I bought mine (about 5000 miles of riding).
For question #2, I don't know if there would be a bad consequence if the oil line routings were swapped.
Good luck making smoke.

I can't see that it would make any difference which way the lines are connected.  There isn't any "timing" between oil pump and crank.  The pump just alternates between cylinders so each one gets the same oil volume.

Since you've gone 300 miles, you should have used up a good quantity of oil.  Can you estimate how much?  That would be a good check of overall pump function.

Manual lists the minimum and maximum oil pump stroke: Min 0.016–0.018, Max 0.142–0.147 inches.  Have you checked that?

What's the piston to cylinder clearance?  Manual says: "Clearance is to be 0.0016–0.0019 inches.  Select piston and cylinder to get above clearance when replacing with new one". Not easy to check, but critical.

What is the ring end gap?  Should be 0.0059–0.0138 inches.
