Update attached. Now to try and figure out what all the numbers mean in relation to dates ?..

It is looking like the 100's & 90's have some consistency.

Ray,
I was able to find the frame number of my SR, but could not find a tag.
Can you tell me where it should be on the frame? I assumed that it should
be on the right side, under the seat as is my GTR. I hope the tag is still
on the bike.
The head frame # is: TIA-26266
I have so many bikes stored around the SR that I was unable to get good
pictures, but plan to drag it out soon. So, pictures in the near future.

Hi Skinny,

Yes, the tag is in the same location as the 350's, which is same as 175's. Sorry if it seems to be missing. Damn as I believe that is also the production number used during final assembly on the line.

Attached an update.

On the SR-175's what I see so far is that they started at say 16026000. Mopar has 16026637, highest frame number so far. I seem to have the lowest so far. So lets assume they planned to make 1,000 of these. I feel they sent an order to production in one job lot, as this would be the best way to track them.

I feel also the engines must have been in different job lots to the engine production line. This due to the fact that we have 4 different number identifications so far. In mass production every order has a tracking number to the production line. These engines would have also had various order changes, such as no holes tapped at gear change lever, cylinders with smaller bore sizes, crank webs stuffed, etc ...

Lets keep the information coming so we can make an assumption on how many were made and how.

Mornin All,

Attached a further update with SR-175 & 100 numbers.

As you will see I have added extra columns also. What seems to be unfolding here is :

1- Production TAG number - This the metal tag riveted to frame. This would have been installed during final assembly.
2- Head Stock - This would have been stamped on during actual frame production.
3- Engine Number - This would have been stamped on during engine case machining, or, stamped on at engine assembly.
4- Clutch Cover Number - This may have been stamped on prior to covers being assembled to engines ?

My assumations are based on knowledge that Bridgestone would not have manufactured everything in house. Japan, then & now still runs with sub-suppliers manufacturing what they do best and feeding sub-assemblies to a production assembly line.

Hal French has a frame number of 16026649, which if we assume they started at 16026001, we have 648 machines manufactured and sold.

As for the SR-100's & 90's I am still trying to figure out what they might mean ?

Good morning, rainy here. Thought I would send the numbers from my SR 100 to the list. Have not checked the engine number yet but here are the numbers from the tag and number stamped in frame next to tag.   20N001127  for the serial no.  and KW 006359  for the stamping next to it. Have a great day and I will report the engine no. when I get to it.

Mornin All,

Attached updated sheet to review. Mike thanks for your SR-100 numbers !

I'll take a stab at the SR-100 production. Open to hear other thoughts if anyone has any ?

If we take the lowest production TAG number 20N001120 and the highest 20N001793, both with Hal. We have 673 units.

If we assume they started at 20N001001 we have 792 units. Which might just tie up with a production plan of 1,000 units for the SR-175's & 100's ??.. I am sure marketing must have estimated what they might sell.

I'll ask Kotaro if he will share these thoughts with some of the ex Bridgestone engineers of the time and see if they can shed any light on this topic.

Ray,
I found the frame tag! Had to remove it to read it because of heavey black
paint.
Where on the trans case is the engine number? (same problem- black paint)
The frame tag number is:
16026223
The clutch cover number is:
TIA-2636
I am amazed at what a hulk this poor bike is. It was ridden hard and put away
with no thought that it would be of interest 40 years later. Funny how things
evolve.

The engine casing number will be found beside the drive sprocket. See attached picture of my own.

Correction- the clutch cover # is: TIA-26361
I left off the last digit in my last post.
The engine case # is: 0186
Is this possible? if you read I upside down
it is 9810, but the #1 is wrong.
I see no letters as others have posted
in their engine #.

Hi Lonnie,

I did notice you had one diget missing on the clutch cover but overlooked mentioning it !.. sorry about that !

Your engine number could very well be correct so do not dispair. There are a few others that do not have a letter in front of the number. The "astix" I have on the sheet is for me. As mentioned earlier I suspect they made a productuion run of frames / rolling chassis. I think the engines were done at various stages throughout the years they did produce these models. My guess from my production exposure over 40 years.

Oh, a quick check on whether the engine is a true SR is look above the sprocket. The hole for the 4 to 5 speed gear change shaft should be blanked off and the tapped holes for the electric switch should not be there. Have a look at the picture I sent, you will see what I am saying.

Thanks for the extra numbers as it all adds to the mystery ??.. haha

sorry i've been absent from the forum for a wile, got a german 4 wheeled animal that needed lots of attention :)
here are the info for my SR175:
1- Production TAG number - 16026280
2- Head Stock - TA1-26319
3- Engine Number - 0 212 (there is a space between 0 and 212)
4- Clutch Cover Number - TA1-26464

Hopefully start assembly stuff this winter, i need to get the cylinder bore and new piston, the frame is clean and powder coated, the engine parts vapor blasted, and i got a bunch of new parts from Richard to put on :D

I  have frame tag number 16O26548 (headstock # TA1-26589), along with most of the chassis parts, but no engine.  I have SR engine number 072 as the spare for my roadracer (which may or may not be the original engine from bike 16026548). My roadracer currently has a modified DT engine in it. I also have complete engine 0548 and none of the rest of that bike.  There may be another set of SR crankcases around, if I find them, I'll post the number.

I just realized the complete engine #0548 matches the last digits of the spare frame.  Weird, because the frame came from Muncie, In, along with a bunch of loose parts, including an engine, in 1985, and the engine came from Illinois about 2 years ago. 

I found the number of the other set of SR cases I have: 045.  That is cases only. It is the set from my road racer when I raced it in the late 70's/early 80's. I had enlarged the intake ports into the crankcases so much that I put most of the guts from that one into the current DT cases on my racer and started over on modifying the ports back in 2003.

I have a BS 175 SR. Once  I start the restoration I will send you the
serial numbers. Currently I am restoring a BS 100 SR, which I have
already sent the serial numbers. The 100 has a spare SR engine.

Old post but I just purchased (paid for!) a 1967 SR175. I don't have the engine case number but the seller forwarded me the frame number, id tag number and side case number.

Frame# TA1-26395
Side case# TA1-26541
Frame ID# 16O 26855

It might be a while before I see it as it's in South Carolina and I'm still looking for a inexpensive way to get it to the west coast. The seller said he could deliver it to Barber next year but i don't know if I can wait that long.
