GTR crank seals
« on: September 17, 2011, 12:15:51 PM »
I got the GTR running the other day. Amazingly, after a bit of a warm-up, it settled down into a nice idle, and this is after sitting for 30 years! Previous owner must have winterized it before storage. However, it is smoking excessively (white) out the RH pipe, (left side is running very little smoke by comparision) which the former owner did elude to as to why he parked it. Also, the RH inner case shows signs of being apart, as I noticed a few bodged-up screw heads.

Am I correct in assuming this is due to RH outer seal (p/n 09090-117) being bad? I've read service bulletin BSG-0070, and some of the comments on this site, which state that these seals were eliminated in later models? Anyone in the club in the U.S. does this repair? Alll comments appreciated!

One addtional question: How big of a job is it to replace the outer seals? About how many hours once the engine is out of the frame? Thanks!

it doesn't take long once the motor is out maybe a hour or 2 but if you want to replace the seals in the ends of the crank itself you will have to split the motor . there are more seals for the driven gear and clutch + o rings they are on another page in the manual Richard should have all these also replace the rotary valve o rings . you will need a impact driver and a rattle gun will help also a small  gear puller .i do recommend buying new case screws i bought some off ebay i will have a look and get you the name of them later but they only cost around $20 i think . do not worry about any specialty tools you do not need them . you may want to get a new ring nut and tab for the clutch depending on the condition and i would defiantly  buy a new left hand nut  off Richard if yours is like my old one and only 6mm thick which came loose and did a lot of damage.(i think my old nut may not have been original  though).  Richard has the gaskets as well .i started off doing exactly the same thing as you but mine turned into a much larger job i would go over everything while the motor is out and check the bearings to. it is amazing how much crap gets into the motor in the life of the bike  .it is a relatively  easy job . i hope this helps cheers

Thanks for all the great info, Coxy!
From my description , could the problem be the rotary valve oil seal (part # 09090-118, ref. # 28 in Richard's parts list)? Or is it more likey to be the crank end seal (part # 09090-117, ref. # 11 in the parts diagram)?

I agree, it is more likely the rotary valve oil seal.  That is the one that lets transmission oil into the crankcase.  If the crank end seal is loose, it won't cause smoke as far as I know.

check the numbers with your parts list in case i have made a mistake and i would think about checking and or replacing all seals -orings etc while your motor is out it might save you a bit of grief later .cheers.

I'm ordering the parts to repair the leaky rh rotary valve seal. Those who have read this post know that I had the motor running, at a good, even idle for several minutes, and it will rev out freely. It has not been run under load (road tested) do to a shot drive chain. Because this bike had been sitting for many years, I'm looking for input on what to check for. I've read the check valves should be cleaned/inspected? And, of course, check points/ignition timing, oil pump settings, etc. Seeing that the engine only has 3700 miles on it, would an engine tear-down/inspection be in order? I'm of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Having said that, I'd not want to have it grenade on me when I do take it for a first ride! Thanks in advance!

I would split the crankcase and check the crankshaft and pistons cylinders it will be good insurance for the long run!
Thanks.
Steve.
