Fuel in exhaust on GP100...
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:42:03 PM »
Hi All,
I have a 1970 GP100 that I am trying to get running. I started it up and it ran, but fuel was pouring out the muffler as it was running and it bogged down everytime I gave it a little throttle. I pulled the carb and cleaned it well (it wasn't really as bad as I thought it would be inside). I reinstalled it and it started right up with the choke on. I let it run a minute and took the choke off. It doesn't bog down anymore but it drips fuel out the rubber joint where the head pipe meets the muffler, so I shut it down. I don't want to let the exhaust get to hot (for obvious reasons). I am wondering if anyone has seen this or can offer a bit of help. I am running it with the cover off the right side, so the air is not flowing through the filter and the throttle is fully closed (not held open) and it seems to idle OK. Also the oil injection is working. (just to give you the operating parameters).
Thanks, Carl

Carl, I've worked on quite a few bikes that accumulated gas in the crank because of a leaking petcock and or carb float. Some even forgot to turn their petcock off for storage. It sounds as if you have managed to purge the crankcase of the extra fuel. I would remove the exhaust and drain it well for safety reasons.

Thanks Bikenstein, That would make sense, the float was gummy (like they get sitting 20+ years) when I cleaned the carb out. I didn't think about the extra fuel getting in the crankcase because I usually work on 4 strokes where that fuel would just dilute the oil, not pour out the exhaust. I posted because I was didn't realize a 2 stroke would behave like that. So you're thinking that after the crank is full purged, it will stop dripping fuel out the exhaust joint rubber? Is there a way to fully purge the crank (besides splitting the cases).
Thanks for the help, Carl

If it's runnin it's probably purged. When you kicked it over the raw fuel probably all went into the exhaust. It should diminish as you run the engine, but I don't want to give you any more advice without actually bein there to see the extent of your problem. The fact that it cranked and ran tells me there was not a significant amount of fuel in the crankcase but I can't say for sure. I would make sure the exhaust is drained. If the engine is runnin clean now, I doubt that you have any excess fuel in the crank left, just maybe an excess of oil that should be consumed as you run the engine. In case the fuel leaking from the exhaust continues, you may have more of a problem.

I went out and kicked it over after letting it sit a few days to evaporate...Started right up and ran OK. I took it for a short ride (maiden voyage) up and down the street and it is not dripping anymore. Thanks alot for the help, I learned a bit more about 2 strokes from ya.
