Title: 1966 90 Trail dis-assembly--PLEASE HELP
Post by: Royal Rick on September 12, 2015, 01:10:21 PM
I have stripped the frame of everything except the oil tank and main stand. How the heck does the oil tank attach? It is stuck fast. And, I can't get the stand tube out of the main stand. I took off the cotter pin and bolt. It looks like it should just slide through but it's won't move.

Thanks for any input!

Hey rick,  The oil tank is attached to the frame with stud and nut. The stud is on the back of the oil tank. There's a hole that the ignition wires (key switch) go through on the other side of the oil tank (left side of frame). The hole is big enough to fit a socket through to loosen the nut. Oil tank should fall away from the frame. Here's a photo of the ignition wire hole. Hope this helps, Steve (not sure I understand the stand problem?)

Thanks so much, Steve. I would not have thought of that! That part of my frame is full of what looks like insulation, but I suspect is an old mouse nest. I pulled it out and can see the nut.

I think the problem with the stand is that the previous owner pounded on the stand bolt with a hammer and created small lips on both ends of the stand tube--that's what is making it stick. Gonna grind the ends some and see if that works.

Really appreciate your help!

Steve, is that your bike in the picture? It looks like someone hacked out a bit where the battery goes.

Dan, Yes it's one of my bikes.  Here's a better photo of the battery area.  It looks identical to my other 90 sport.  Just a bit of rust from a leaky battery.  Sorry about hijacking your thread, Steve
