pistons and cylinders

While looking over my second engine I noticed that the piston was broken and fearing the worst I tore apart the engine to get the prices out. I then looked to find the broken pieces had damaged the cylinder wall. Right through the chrome in some places. I read that there are different types of pistons and rings for chrome and not chrome cylinders. Would it be taboo to have a machine shop hone and sleeve the cylinder. And is it possible to get rings for that work with sleeved cylinders?

If  you have the cylinders sleeved with any iron-based material, either the chrome-faced (std. 90 iron cylinder) or regular iron rings (std. 175) will work.  You just can't use the chrome-faced rings in a chrome bore.  Either choice also works in bores that have been nikasil plated.
