Tora Magneto Cover
« on: May 15, 2011, 03:27:14 PM »
OK... I can't pull the mag cover with a standard two jaw puller so I am posting these pics for Steve (and anyone else) to see if he has the proper Rockford tool. The tool I have in the pics is what it probably looks like, but that tool is for a British bike and is the wrong size.

If someone has one I'd sure like to borrow it!!

I'm guessing that the crankcase splitting tool isn't a big hammer and a chisel, so .... no I don't. Anything else I'll need?? (Band aids, Liquid Advil, cotton balls...)

I used the puller Steve sent me and it worked just fine. That mag is on a tapered shaft and it took a little work but it finally popped off. Once I had the mag cover off I could inspect the rest of the magneto and get to the phillips head screws that hold the cases together.

It is a good thing I split the cases because both of the crankshaft roller bearings were rusted and locked up. When I kicked the engine over it appears that the one crank bearing may have been turning in the case and on the other the crankshaft was turning inside the bearing. There is no apparent damage to anything, but had I run it like that it would have locked up or worse.

Time to make a parts list....  ;D

Yes sir... left hand thread. If you get a chance shoot me the link for that puller, you are right, you would have to own one if you have one of these bikes. You almost have to pull that cover for any kind of ignition work. I don't think you could set the timing without pulling the cover, there are three screws and they are covered up by the mag cover.

I was wonder about K & L, and since there was no link provided, I went on a search.
In case anyone is interested in scoping this out, here's the K & L web site:  http://www.klsupply.com/Home.aspx

The most relevant link to tools is the online catalog found here:  http://www.klsupply.com/Home/2011KLcatalogQuickview.aspx

You can get that puller from Tucker rocky  part number 15-0601 about 13.95.
Most motorcycle shops carry Tucker rocky parts.
Thanks.
Steve.
PS Tucker Rocker is a dealer distributor only.
