Where is 100 TMX specific manual?
« on: February 28, 2014, 02:50:54 AM »

Any one know where to find manuals specific to BS 100 models? Are these manuals out there? I’m reading BS 90 manual and it seems close to my TMX 100 on most things. Are there owners Manual, or Tec Manual for 100's out there?

Hi,

In 30 years I've never come across a Technical manual for any of the BS100 models. The BS100 Sport is nothing more than a "Jet-Lube" 90 Sport with a bigger bore size, so the BS90 manuals are fully applicable to it. For the Pipe frame models (BS100 Trail, TMX and G/P) the engine is the same as the 100 Sport, so you can use the engine section of the 90 manual. There is nothing for the Frame or Cycle parts other than "reading between the lines" from the 175 manual.

There is a Rockford Parts lists which covers the 90, 100 Sport and 100 Trail models, but the only parts data I've found for the 100TMX and G/P is in a couple of Dealer Service Letters and some Bridgestone supplementary sheets for the 100 Trail parts list. Far from a comprehensive coverage!.

If anyone does find a Service Manual or Factory Parts List for the TMX, I'd like to know about it.

First of all WOW what a great answer. Even if it was a bit disappointing to find there was not a manual out there. The community here seems great. Ok now that a rubbed some egos a bit I am hoping for more info. :-)

Apart from the different bore size is the clutch and Transmission the same for 100 engine and 90 engine? Or just similar? Are transmission parts interchangeable between the two? I am going to check the TMX's transmission next don't even know how much fluid it takes.

Second question on the forks and shocks. Was going to check them & replace seals if needed. The manual talks about fork fluid being so many inches below top for proper level and is model specific. Does someone know specific measurements for the TMX or a good rule of thumb. Thanks.

I am a few weeks away from completing a restoration on a GP 100 which has the same engine and internal components as the TMX.  Just this past Friday I added the oil to the front shocks and transmission.  I used the specifics found in an owner's manual for the TMX/GP bikes.  The manual specifies 0.6 liter of 10W-30 for the transmission as an "all-season" oil.  You can also use single weight oils depending on the season.

For the front shocks, it was a little more complicated.  Each leg gets a total of 112 cc.  Of that 112 cc, they state 70% should be a 60 weight "spindle" oil and the remaining 30% a 30 weight oil.

The auto parts store thought I was crazy asking for 60 weight oil.  They suggested 75-80 weight gear oil.  I found 60 weight shock oil online and you can get 60 weight motor oil all day at any Harley service shop.

Hope this helps.

Morning Rowland,
Thanks for the good info. I will be needing that for my 90 sport and the little 50 at some time in the near future. That is if this snow and ice ever melt.

Mike - your 50 has sealed front shocks. The compression dampeners are a sealed system and not "rebuildable". Im halfway through a 50 restoration and discovered a totally collapsed front shock. Had to buy a whole new front end.

You will have no trouble with the 90 sport as it is pretty simple.

Thanks DCR,
That is good to know before I start fooling with it. Everything on it appears good so hopefully I will have no issues with the forks.

I threw out the collapsed part, but still have all the other pieces so let me know if you need something. I bought a complete new front so the rest of the old one is in a box.

Hey Mike,

That info was still fresh in my head from Friday.  Apparently the short term memory is still working.  I've got a real nice TMX/GP owner's manual that has all that info in it.  It also has a nice color wiring diagram.  I don't think there's a TMX/GP wiring schematic on the site.  I can scan it into my computer and email it to  ???  Who would approve and post something like that?

Probably one of the moderators or Richard. You might check with Steve Reed. He is a moderator.

Moguldan, (Or is that just Dan fo short?),

Glad I could be of help. Yes, the bottom end of the 100 engine is pure BS90. Crank, clutch transmission, kickstart and oute engine cases etc. are identical. The inner crankcase halves, however, are different because the hole to accept the cylinder spigot is larger on the 100 and the cylinder studs are larger and(I  think) spaced slightly wider apart. You will also need to remember that the right hand clutch casing, carb cover and disc valve cover were all modified whe "Jet-LubE oil injection was introduced, so these parts from an early BS90 will not fit your 100 engine.

I can second Rowland's comment on quantity and type of fork oil. I use straight SAE 50 engine oil in my Bridgestone forks. There are various "SAE 50" fork oils available but these are designed modern forks and I think the SAE rating is not the same as for engine oils - I've found these fork oils is far too thin for 1960s forks. Make sure you get SAE 50 Engine oil - the old thick treacly stuff.

Thought I'd post this to this thread despite it's age so that future "searchers" might find it.

This is a TMX/GP specific parts supplement that I got with some other manuals.
