100tmx Clutch basket Repair
« on: March 21, 2014, 03:36:39 PM »
HI,

Currently restoring a 100TMX and going through the engine. I got the clutch cover off last night, removed the clutch pack and the basket as well... and when I pulled it off the shaft I found this :-(

I am really surpriesd to see the steel half of this fail like that. Since all the pieces line up perfectly I have been thinking of trying to TIG welding them back on and then remachining the critical surfaces after cleaning it very well. Has anybody ever tried to repair this type of failure before?

Thanks very much for your time,

James

I am not a TMX expert, so can't speak to the repairability of this kind of a break. I can say that when I saw it my stomach flipped, so sending best wishes for a speedy recovery. The cavalry (the site tech gurus) should come riding in pretty soon, and Im sure you will get some good advice.
Good luck!

James
I had a similar problem on a 90 that i was dismantling recently. I decided the best plan of attack was to replace it with a used or NOS part. I think these 90 and 100 parts are interchangeable.

Good luck

Love the sign. Would be appropriate here as well.
Here's the one that hangs outside my shop office door.

hi james , this is what i found in a couple of my spare motors from the taka , tmx an gp , looks to be from hard clutch engagement as in burn outs an wheelies , replace it with one from most any 90, 100 series motor , dont think you will have much luck welding this an getting it to stay together , william anderson
