Romaine's 1967 HS175 build thread
« on: June 19, 2016, 09:29:02 PM »
Hello,

I decided that I was going to pull out my Grandpa's HS175 and see if I can make a little headway on it.

I bought the 1967 Hurricane Scrambler  a few years back (Sept 2013) from a neighbor of my grandparents.

See story here: http://bridgestonemotorcycleparts.com/index.php?topic=3231.msg16877#msg16877

So for the last 2 years - the bike has sit in my dry shed with a coat of Wd-40 over it to help stop rust.

I pulled it out today and took a few pics of what I needed to replace and begin the arduous task of putting a parts list together.

I decided to start with the obvious parts - Note - I have not started this engine - it will turn over - it has compression - that's it, no further investigations beyond that.
What I have been told - it ran about the time my Grandpa did in 1990, but it had a hard time starting, something like that.

So these are some of the issues I have found and must fix:

Brake Lever, Clutch Lever are both broken..

I am not sure what this is? (Pic #2) - Starter Lever Assembly?  I wonder how that works.. looks broken..

Cables are in rough shape  see pic #3- but they all seem to work (throttle pull, front brake, rear brake) - not sure about the "carb starter wire"..

As you can see above, I have quite a few things to fix..

Front tires are Bridgestone and rear is SEARS.. both hold air - but both are rotten.  I will replace - but I may just keep them on for show - I men does SEARS still make a tire?

Seat is shredded.. I think I will be ordering one from Thailand.. Haven't decided on which one.. Most likely the cheaper one - cause honestly, you see all that I have to do (buy $$)..

I removed the seat, to get a better look at the frame - not much rust - lot of dirt, lot of oil..  I can see how the rivet are inserted to hold the cover.. looks pretty simple to replace.

I decided to remove the tank.

I removed the long bolt, unhook the hoses (they are shot too) from the petcock and wallah - tank comes right off..

The nut on the petcock was a 30mm , and it came off easily, although I wonder if the position of the lever is correct to drive..

Petcock lever was stiff.. I haven't disassembled it yet, but by the looks of the guts, I may have to replace, although that may be an issue - Can this be cleaned? (pic #2)

The Ignition coil is also a concern (pic #3), the spark plug boot has been taped, and it did not hold to the plug very well.. I have not checked spark - but normally this would be something I replace - but again I need to locate one..

Looks like you are off to a great start! If your bike is complete and turns over, that makes it a very good candidate for resto or refurb. Good luck with your project. There's lots of 175 stuff that comes and goes on ebay, so keep an eye there.

Busy Day..

My CP air compressor arrived at the local freight company - spent the morning picking it up and getting it set up in the garage.. My old Craftsman finally gave out.. This one is 115V and is rated 7.1 CFM at 90psi.. The RCP-226VP is Solid, "Like a rock"

Some parts came in today - so I thought Id get started on a few things..

Brake and Clutch levers first..

Twenty years now, where did they go? Twenty years, I don't know. I sit and I wonder sometimes, where they've gone.."

Need a part number on this?

I am looking at the parts catalog (pic #1) and it does not seem to show this rubber joint (pic #2) on the HS muffler (pic #3)

Does anyone know the part number?  - Is it part number 6362-5000?

Just a quick update on the progression of the bike.

The seat came in about a month ago - Quality seemed to be good and what I expected - no complaints. (I went with the cheaper ebay seller from Thailand). The seat came with rivets.

For the removal stage I just worked my way around the seat - removing old rivets (they pull out) and then pushed up all the little sharp tangs holding the vinyl seat.

Installation was reverse process - I started by adding a bit of padding to the seat and then stretching seat out and poking the little sharp tangs through the fabric in the corners to hold.

The rivets are a bit "hokey" they weren't the same as I pulled out. There was a front and back section and I ended up using a bit of glue to hold them - seemed to be more decoration than functional.

The last pic shows the finished product (I added the belt soon after this pic) and it turned out great. I would say a good hour worth of work.

Replaced the Ignition coil and Spark Plugs today.

I went with the NGK B8HS plugs - Checking the Gap - I was at .025" and according to the owners manual, they should be between .022 and .024.. I left them alone and installed them.. honestly I could have been mistaken as .024 also touched..

The ignition coil installed fairly easy - however the wiring needs a bit of attention. I have to find these double bullet connectors as the wiring is getting corroded.. You can see from pic#2 that this connector needs some attention - I wonder if these are available - or do I need to just solder / create a connection... The 4 blue wires come together here.

Lastly performed a compression check and both cylinders read almost exactly the same at 110 psi.. This was after kicking the bike over 4 to 5 times.. Not real sure on a motorcycle how the procedure is done - but on a car you turn the engine over a few times... so I hope it is correct..
