gas tank refurb

I just found a creative way to make new side pads for your tank. Take a styrene light panel and cut out side pads. Paint them black then, use irrigation tubing found in the landscaping section of a hardware store and split it down the middle to hold it onto the tank.

How did you get the gas tank all nice and shiny again?  is it polished?  or re-chromed and then painted?
I have a tank in OK shape but lots of pitting in the chrome and I want it to look new again.

I used Rustoleum "chrome" spray paint and vinegar to clear the rust out of the inside. It is very pitted and probably unable to be re-chromed.
I'm getting ready to put it up for auction on E-bay later next month.
