Hi Low switch wiring
« on: November 02, 2014, 10:28:22 AM »
My DT 175 has the Hi Low switch on the side cover.  I can't find it on the wiring diagram or in any of the service bulletins. How is it wired and how is it used?

I also have that lever that is supposed to change the shift pattern.  It does not feel like it is moving anything in the gear box.  Currently the bike shift 1 down 4 up but that happens in either lever position.

I am sure that the owners manual says how these are to be used but I can't find a copy of that in the download section.  Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, Tom,

The high/low charge switch was only factory fitted to the early 175s which had the half-engine speed generator (although it was available as a spare part for all models).

All it does is to switch in the third phase of the generator output when in "high" position. This is normally switched in automatically within the ignition switch when the lights are on and during daytime running the generator only uses two phases. The charge switch was intended to boost charge during daylight running in cases where the battery was running down due to low speed riding.

I've actually done the same job on my late model Dual Twin by connecting together the Brown wire and the White wire going to the back of the ignition switch. This leaves the third generator phase permanently in circuit. The only downside is if you do a lot of high speed running, you could end up boiling the battery, but in normal use it doesn;'t appear to be a problem - and the battery doesn't discharge so often.
