cover knob needed

My side battery cover came off while riding and the knob is lost. I am trying to find a replacement. Does anyone know the length or part mumber or have an extra I could buy?  Does the other models have same knob?  My cover was real nice but now looks awful and needs painting. Also any suggestions on where to send it to make new again?

6831-9000 is the part number you'd be looking for. I probably have a used one if no one else comes forward or you decide you want a nos knob....

I feel your pain, I lost the side cover off mine a couple weeks ago. I didn't find it, but picked up one from e-bay, complete with knob. It'll need painting, but is usable as is.  I also lost my toolkit, which will be harder to replace.

So it isn't just me that has happened to. Lost mine three times, only found it twice.
The third time was the night of the deer collision. I have a beater spare which will need to be included in the rebuild whenever that happens.

After checking every nook & cranny, I'm sorry to report back that I was unable to find any extra knobs.

              Hi Hap,
                            To get you back on the road before finding the correct knob, try your local lawnmower or baby buggy store. Many of these are fitted with similar items.

     You want one with a 6mm thread, 25mm long with 10mm of thread, might have to adapt it a bit  There should be a rubber bung/spacer (6833-9000) on the the inside of the cover, which stops the knob going AWOL and gives you something to tighten against. Easily made from a plastic wine bottle cork. Anyone tell us the correct length of that spacer ?? Mine are non-original.

Google "plastic knobs". There are a ton of them out there, with and without metric studs. If the best you can find has a threaded hole, Super Glue one end of a long enough, correct size bolt, run it in and when it dries cut and chamfer to the correct length. Share your success.

What's with the covers falling off?? Love to have that happened to a finely finished side cover! Another point of failure from engine vibration I guess. I am now replacing the old, hard rubber spacer with a softer durometer one if it can be found. It will pull in further, and act like a spring washer and damper against vibration.

I'm pretty sure my cover loss was good old-fashioned carelessness.  I checked the battery/charging system a couple weeks earlier and was planning on doing some more checking, so didn't fasten the cover down.  Then I forgot and hopped on and went for a ride. The 48 year old rubber spacer was pretty hard, though.

I think a piece of rubber gas line would probably be a reasonable replacement.

I found a new knob on ebay but I dont have any rubber spacer and not really sure where it goes? Anyone have a picture?

Here's the inside of my sidecover.  The rubber piece is about 5/8 inch long and is a spacer and tensioner (kind of like a rubber lockwasher) to keep the knob from vibrating loose.  A piece of 3/16 or 1/4 inch fuel line would probably work, or check to see if Richard has any left.

         Just picked up an NOS rubber stopper. It's 18mm long, 15mm diameter with a 5mm hole for a good tight fit on the cover knob shaft. Thick wall fuel tube should work fine. Cover should also have a small rubber button (3452-3210) on the bracket at the front, approx 8mm thick. Should also be a wedge shaped rubber pad on the frame hanger bracket. These all help to stop the cover vibrating and reduce noise.
