Oil injection criteria.
« on: February 14, 2016, 10:44:10 PM »
Looking for some guidance on what constituted a bike having or not having oil injection. EG: Was it only available as an option on certain models early, then was standard equipment later? What year was it introduced? Just picked up a nice, red Sport 90, #18C002440. No title. Obviously, C makes it a '66 or '68. I've seen gallery pics showing what are described as '66 Sport 90's, but BS ad literature for a '66 shows NO oil injection. My 65 Sport 60 has no oil injection, but I've seen other models described as 1965's that do have it. Anyone care to chime in on this one? Thanks.

Hi,

"Jet Lube" was introduced around 1966. Earlier models all used 20:1 Pre-mixed fuel, including the fan-cooled BS7 and Homer models. The BS90 engine was modified to use Oil Injection and bnth "Jet Lube" and pre-mix 90s were available alongside each other for a while. Of course, all roadster BS100 models used the BS90 "Let Lube" engine with a larger cylinder and piston.

All 175 road bikes came fitted with "Jet Lube" as standard, although the stripdown sequence in factory Technical manual shows engine photos of a 175 that was clearly never fitted with an oil pump. Presumable that was either a prototype Dual Twin , or maybe an early 175SR motor?

The 350s all came with "Jet Lube!"

I don't think the BS50/BS60 Sport series were ever sold with Oil Injection, although Bridgestone did display a one-off "Jet Lube" BS50 Sport at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1966, and I have a Japanese booklet brochure from that period showing an Oil Injection BS50 Sport and some BS90s as Deluxe versions of the standard bikes.

Presumably, they didn'tt feel the market was right for a deluxe 50.

To help verify Graham's post. I have both oil injected (Jetlube) and pre-mix models of a 1967 BS90 Mountain. Also a 1967 pre-mix 90 Deluxe. A friend of mine has a 1967 oil injected Deluxe. Both versions were sold in Australia in 1967/68.

Thanks Graham & RayK. My question was perhaps a bit premature, as I discovered much of the information when I dug a bit deeper in some forum posts. It becomes obvious that both were offered when looking at Graham's fine work with the VIN table he has constructed. I also replied with additional VIN info, for both my Sport 60, and this 90. I found more info in Graham's long version of Bridgestone history. Thanks for your support. Certainly a great web community here.
