Dyna S conversion on a Bridgestone 175
« on: March 26, 2018, 09:18:12 PM »
I was very impressed with the dyna s conversion that Old Swartout executed. I am new to the Bridgestone world and I am not sure I know the difference between a half speed and engine speed alternator. My 175 has an idler gear - does that make it a half speed. My second question is - does the dyna S rotor for the GL1000 come with 2 magnets as referenced in Old Swarouts pictures and write up?

With an idler gear, your alternator is the "full-speed" design.  You can use most any of the Dyna S systems with two triggers opposite each other.  The KZ1000 or Suzuki systems seem to be the most popular used on Ebay.  Buying new, just go for any with two trigger units opposite each other, you probably won't use the backing plate anyway.  Here's a write up on the 350 conversion which would be the same as a 175: http://bridgestonemotorcycleparts.com/index.php?topic=3645.0

In another thread, a user also mentioned using a Pazon (New Zealand) ignition which appears to be a pretty simple installation, too. I don't know which model he used.

One quick question just to make sure I have not misinterpreted your instructions, the KZ1000 system is a single magnet rotor with 2 pickups. Based on your comments, a single magnet rotor will work correctly on the 175. Again thanks for your help.

Correct on the single magnet rotor for the later 175's and 200's and the 350.  The early 175's with the half-speed alternator needed the two magnet rotor.
