175 Dynamo
« on: September 26, 2015, 10:34:38 AM »
Does anybody have experience with rebuilding a dynamo. Is it worth it, I've got it apart and have bearings and a seal on order. Does the breaker cam slide right off? This engine was in rough shape when I found it and the dynamo was nearly frozen, the field coil and rotor were covered in corrosion. Does anybody know if it will work properly after being in rough shape

Check the coils for proper resistance, opens or shorts, if they look OK, it should work after replacing seals and bearings.
I did have an open coil due to corrosion, but the broken wire was in an easy place to get at the two broken ends and I was able to solder them together by adding a short jumper wire.

The points cam can be difficult to remove, but a good small puller should get it off.  I did have trouble with one, I was unable to get it to come off even after using a fair amount of heat.  Finally gave up and used a grinder to remove the old one and replaced it with one from Richard.  Just don't hurt the shaft, even if you have to destroy the cam to get it off!  Might be a good idea to check and make sure you can get a new cam first if it won't come off with a puller.

Thanks its on the way to complete, But can't get ahold of richard and cannot find a new breaker cam. Is there a source of these somewhere or another manufacturer that will work as a replacement.

he has them, it just takes a while for him to contact you
i just finished rebuilding mine, i just used a little puller to remove the cam,
there is a tiny key in there, so watch for that,

as long as there is still continuity in the windings and the magnets are still magnetic, it'll work fine after you change out the bits
