BS350 air cleaner mod
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:57:11 AM »
Hi Guys,

This mod has been covered before, but I thought I would share my take on it.  I made a sandwich plate from some 1.6mm(?) ali sheet I had kicking around in the shed. By straightening out the old mesh plate and using it as a template, it made it really easy to mark out the curves right.  With some assistance from a jigsaw, hacksaw, files and a drill I ended up with something like the below.  I then reshaped the mesh and reinstalled, cut up a Yamaha air cleaner for one of those 4 wheeled things and installed it over the top. I then shaped the sandwich plate to a simular radius so that it would hold the air filter tight on the ends.

all that was left to do was reinstall the screws, then test fit to ensure there were no gaps in the corners!

thanks for the reply's. :) I thought this might help inspire someone else.

The part number for the Yamaha filter element I used was: 5B4-E4451-00.  It was in stock at my local, so it is what was used.  It turned out it was a big round filter designed to fit over a cage, so when opened up will allow for 4 filters to be made out of it:)

I like it. Did you save your pattern? Im doing this mod too. Foam will be safer under the screen. So will the engine.

If you could find another GTR/O screen simply cut the mesh out and use that to clamp the foam between the two.

Original foam or flock as it's sometimes called was behind the mesh screen.  Latest thinking is,  put it outside the screen, no chance of it getting sucked into the engine and it's easier to clean.

That's what I mean, original screen first with a foam on top then clamped with a screen with the mesh cut out.

Wasn't questioning your solution, just responding to gtrman's comment above  'Foam will be safer under the screen. So will the engine' .  Can be confusing sometimes with the air filter being upside down on the bottom of the cross box.   'Under the screen', can be interpreted either way, if you see what I mean.              Brian.
