Anyone chrome the black 200ss exhausts please?
« on: July 31, 2016, 08:58:21 AM »
Hi everyone, first time in the 175/200 section as I spend most of my time in the 350 section.

I've just bought what is supposed to be a 1967 175DT Hurricane. This model was the very 1st Bridgestone I owned and I have been looking for one for a while here in the UK. I eventually found one and bought it sight unseen (I know, don't say it). Anyway, I picked it up yesterday and it's not too bad at all except it's been painted in the candy blue from the 200ss and the exhausts are black and from a 200ss too. On the plus side, the engine is sweet and runs very well, although there appears to be a very slight leak from the R/H/S engine case.

The exhausts are solid, almost look new but i would like to get them chromed as they were on the Hurricane. Has anyone done this and was it successful?

I could also do with a pointer as to where I can source some NOS BS tank badges if anyone knows?

I'm sure I will be asking many more questions in the coming months.

Thanks. Sye

Congrats on the acquisition, Sye. I think sight unseen is as safe as some of the pics used to represent bikes for sale.  ;D

Thanks Bert but the story has a twist.

I started the engine and it sounded pretty good but then I rode it. After a few minutes I heard slight metallic knocking so went straight home to investigate. I noticed that there were gases were escaping from the joint between each cylinder and the heads and the right one was weeping too, so pulled the heads and found that both pistons and barrels were toast.

I now have it stripped and as you can see by the pictures it's not pretty. The cause would appear to be the fact that the air filter has disintegrated and particles of grit, sand and small stones have been drawn into the engine over time.

Time to check your air filters and make sure that they are in one piece.

The cylinder damage doesn't look too bad, but sorry for your predicament. All is fixable with currency and time.
