GTR Cylinder Question
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:26:34 PM »
I was a bike mechanic in the sixties and early seventies, but never dealt with these chrome cylinders. Would someone tell me where I can get them done right? It would probably run ok like it is with new pistons and rings but there has been a lot of blowby on both sides. Also, when I pulled the plug on the left cylinder the plug was packed with aluminum grit. When I pulled the head a dime sized plug came out of the top of the piston and stuck to the head. No hole, no scoring on the cylinder walls, just a plug 1/4" deep as if it just rotted out sitting there. Even the head was smooth with no damage. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks Steve. I already bought pistons from Richard. Just trying to figure out how this site operates.

Steve, here is the piston, head and cylinder. I couldn't find the plug that broke out, but it was in one piece minus the few fragments laying on top of the piston.

Bikenstein,
Looking at the picture of the piston crown damage to the top of the piston.
Is usually due to high temperatures plugs or ignition timing advanced or
A weak mixture and sometimes forms a neat hole in the centre of the piston.
Yamaha and Suzuki's had this problem back in the day.
So it maybe its a detonation issue so  when you put the new pistons in replace
The points check the timing, rebuild and clean the carbs.
Remember back then you would always check the points and timing when these
Bikes came in for a service etc.
Thanks.
Steve.

Here is the exhaust port. I guess I can't download but one picture at a time. I agree with you about the causes. But it seems strange that the plug itself was  still there sticking to the head. Points, plugs, condensers and timing were s.o.p. anytime a bike came in for tuning problems.

This is the older head with fin blocking and the weaker exhaust flange casting. Does the ser. # 00108 mean it was 108th off the assembly line?
As far as checking the timing on these back in the day, I never had to. I was the only one in middle Georgia who owned one and I never had to replace anything except maybe a spark plug. I road mine hard. 110 mph, drag racing other bikes and cars (always won) and wheelies through town, down main st. and around the dairy queen. Sorry, I got off track, but you can understand why I love this bike.

Like to hear the enthusiasm!  We could use more!  Nice to see a bike go to someone like you.  That's what this is all about or should be anyway.

Say Bikenstein,
I believe ...108 would mean 108th off the line.
You mention having heads without the notched fins near the spark plug holes.
Mine also has complete head fins and is #1289. Seems like most photos posted lately of GTR engines are all notched fin variety. Unfortunately now I have a damaged head (broken fins) after the deer collision. Hope I can find a matching one.

Is that what happened to your front end? Hope you're ok after that. I'd love to hear the whole story. When I wrecked my first 350 at 70 mph, I thought about quittin' ridin' (for about 3 minutes). I still have the scars.  On the serial number (obvious), I didn't know if they had different sets for different countries. Don't really know what I was thinkin'. I don't remember the number on the one I bought new in 67 or 68, but I believe it was under 50, one of the first to come to the states. You've probably heard it before but didja get any deer meat?

Thanks snojet and moonpup and thanks for the deer versus GTR story. I hope old smokey keeps smokin that GTR down the road. Unfortunately all my old photos and bike memorablia burned in 1970 when my Dad's house blew up. he had just painted the whole house and shut all the windows thinkin' it would dry quicker. They had slept in a trailer out back. The next morning, as he opened the back door, the house sort of exploded and was leveled. They think the gas furnace pilot light was the fault. As far as my GTR, well in 69 I got a job as the first mechanic at Honda of Griffin, GA. It was the first Honda shop in the area. About an 800 sq. ft. old building. My boss didn't like the attention my BS was gettin' so I had to park it out back. That still didn't satisfy him, so he arranged to get me a brand new old stock 450 Bomber at his cost which was I believe about 450 bucks. It was ugly next to the 68 and 69 450's but I bought it and gave my GTR to my Dad to keep it in the family. I still remember sittin' there in the garage lookin' at it wondering why I gave it up. The Honda sounded better but I was still attached to the GTR. I even kept it polished up for him. Then one day I came home to find a brand new 700 Moto Guzzi V7 in it's place. He had traded it. I've been wantin' one ever since. Finally got one and I'm overjoyed to have one with such a low production number. It's missin' a lot of parts, but slowly I'm findin' donor stuff. I don't really care that the parts are old or damaged. To me they just tell the story of another GTR and it's owner. It could be I might get a part off my old bike. Right now I'm just enjoying havin it sittin there like my old friend. I'm gettin way too sentimental over this bike but I guess that's the way it is when you're a year round, all weather, daily rider like I was. I really am enjoying this site. Don't feel like the Loner Stoner anymore. Keep up the good comments. Thanks................. Ponytail blowin in the wind lol

It looks like I was wrong in believing my heads didn't have the notched fins.
Now I'm going to have to go to the garage and see what the exhaust flange mounts look like....
Hope I'm not hijacking the thread in some other direction. The brown spots on the engine would be some liquid from the deer.
