Tip for 175 air pipes - make your own
« on: January 15, 2017, 08:42:57 AM »
I had some trouble sourcing replacement air pipes for my 175HS. I ended up making my own from stainless tube and then polishing to a mirror finish.

I bought a 500mm length of stainless 45mm (1.75") diameter stainless tube and cut it into 86mm lengths. I then polished them using a mop and three grades of grit. I left two round and squeezed two in the vice to make them oval. Well impressed with the result and they work out at around £3.00 ($4.00) each, result.

Sye...............Respect !!   Always a great deal of satisfaction from having a go and it works, great saving as well, proper job  ;D, photo ?

Just stripped and repaired the ignition switch and front brake switch on the GTO. Now work a treat.

Photo attached as requested by Brian. The left side two are the round ones.

As I understand it, they were originally round and then changed for the oval ones?

Photo didn't take long !! ;D      I would be equally proud of those and even better in SS. Did you machine to length or hand cut.     Brian

Hand cut using a mitre block and hacksaw Brian, then dressed and chamfered the edges slightly using a file to get rid of any sharp bits.

Even more respect !!     Sounds simple to hand cut tube square but it isn't, especially with large diameter, thin wall.    Brilliant job, they look like high quality, factory made items. Mega.   8)                                           Brian.

Nice!

I opted for chrome plated brass tail piece sold for under sink plumbing.
At 1-1/2 inch OD it's smaller than stock (2"?).

Do you think that affects the engine performance?

1 1/2 in. dia. feeding an 18mm carb (22% of the area)? It'll never know the difference.
