I wish to paint my currently flat black 1970 175HS the correct candy apple red. Does anyone have a cross reference or direct source for the correct color paint?

The paint you require is flamboyant candy red easily available in the uk from rs paints

I tell you, that color just grows on you.

On the U.S. side of the pond, this will get you close:

You'll need a platinum or white base coat. You may want to try both to see which is best, assuming you have a non-faded sample. Of course, the number of coats will have a noticeable effect on color shade. I have used an airbrush to spray samples on a piece of sheet metal so I could test various combinations without wasting as much paint as a regular gun takes. If you are looking for a Concours-perfect OEM match, you'll need a non-faded sample and may need to try a variety of brands and different candy reds, base coats, etc. There are others on this forum that have put a lot of effort into getting a perfect match, maybe one of them will add something to this thread.
The 1 quart ready to spray should be enough for the bike with a little left over.
You'll need a good respirator, etc.
Both Summit Racing and Eastwood carry a wide variety of types/brands of candy apple red, including powder coat. Of course, there is always your local automotive paint supplier that will have a lot of paint samples. I might try a candy powder coat on something one of these days just for fun.

So...what I get from OldSwartout is that this is a straight up candy apple red and a not particularly exotic or bespoke color. That Summit source is one helluva lot cheaper than House of Kolor paints. Unless someone has a refinement over candy apple red (I'm not shooting for "concourse" here) that's what I'll go with.

This is a link to service letter #BSG-0034 about paint. I don't know how helpful it is? Good luck, Steve

There may be some difficulty tracing those old Dupont codes, but it's possible someone can still do it. In the 2003, I tried to purchase some Dupont paint to match the code of paint I used on my roadracer in the late 70's. The Dupont dealer couldn't even cross-reference the code any longer, the codes, etc. had all changed. Someone that saved the old catalogs should be able to find the recipe, though.
Here's a post on this forum with an explanation from Nick Holt regarding his experience painting a 350 that also mentions the 175. It shows how much effort is needed to try to match original colors. It also has the House of Color code.
