Thanks Steve. Sorry about your friend. I always liked that tank style. Much better than the older ones. Did that one have a 5 speed tranny or were they still 4 speed? I love your old pictures. Mine burned in my Dad's house along with my guitars and all my motorcycle memorabilia.

I believe they did go to a five speed in 68 with that new tank style. They marketed some on into 69 even with the new 69 painted tank bikes. I was workin as a mechanic at the first Honda shop in Griffin, GA. My boss made me park my GTR in the back because it drew too much attention ;D

David,
I think it was a four speed, i can still remember the day we got it running in the workshop.
And then we had a cup of tea.
Thanks.
Steve.

I think the bike in the pic is a 5 speed, likely a 68 or 69 model. The 4 speeds were the KO models and
were sold from 65 through 68. I had one. The black bomber. It really needed another gear !

After further inspection, this is probably a European 1969 model as the rubber fork gaiters
were not introduced to the USA market until 1970. This is a great picture.

I agree Aero with the KO needin another gear. It would still top out well over 100 but the lower gears were not spaced well. Steve, maybe a shifter fork was bent cause the K1 had a 5 speed ;D

A bit of "Insider info" helps to identify the age of this 450. The "J" registration suffix ran from August 1st 1970 to July 31st 1971, suggesting the bike was probably first registered in 1971. That does seem quite late for a 450K1, so it's possible that the bike stayed languished in the Honda warehouse for a year or more before being sold to first customer. I do remember attending a dealer presentation in late 1968 where they had the "New" chrome tank, 5-speed CB450 on display, and most of the 5-speed 450s I remember over here were on "G" or "H" suffix plates (i.e. 1969 / 1970).

We never had the later 450s in the UK with the disc brakes, only the original 4-speed "Black Bomber" and the 5-speed K1. I guess the release of the CB750 in late 1969 caused enough of a stir to overshadow the 450 in UK showrooms, and it was quietly dropped from the range.

I'll bet you've had lots of Trumpets and Beezers, not to mention other European bikes. What's the oldest bike you ever had? I don't really like the look of disc brakes or anything other than spoke wheels. I hate most plastic too.

When I was 16, I took the tank and seat off mine and put a teardrop tank, saddle seat and pillion on it. Wish I still just had the tank now.
