175 DT barn find HELP! Oil leak
« on: March 15, 2015, 06:55:29 PM »
 >:( :Help! I have a 175DT that was in storage since 1989, cool bike so I bought it! Been piddling 4 a month, changed fluids, cleaned carbs, cleaned tank, soaked the cylinders, got spark, fuel to carbs, but no start. It doesn't even sound like it, no cough, pop, etc. Plugs not wet, burnt etc. So yesterday, I decided to clean carbs again, did and re-installed, topped the crankcase oil off to btm. of plug (per manual ). This morning went to shop and OMG a HUGH pool of oil under bike, right side. This bike has not dripped a drop for the past month!
Pulled right carb cover off and full of oil! pulled carb and oil is dripping out of end of crankcase collar? (where carb is installed on) It's crankcase oil, not 2 cycle oil. Hate to sound stupid, but I am not a mechanic of motorcycles, zero skills, more of the polisher, painter type guy.... have I got a basket case? Bike has 8200 mi. and I have kicked my tail off until the oil problem surfaced!
Very cool bike, I was hoping to get it to run! Went thru all manuals, Bridgestone and Climer...nothing that tells of the oil problem...
Any ideas? thanks to those that have more talent than me!

must be leaking thru the oil injection pump. The crankcase is full of oil, i would suspect the plugs to be oily. I have never worked on the oil injection pumps so i cannot comment on the fix.

Not a lot to go on here but it sounds like you overfilled the crankcase with oil. In your first sentence, you said, among other things, you changed fluids. I assume that means crank oil. Then you topped off crankcase oil to bottom of the plug.

Again, just based on what you stated, I will go with overfill.

0.7 liter or 0.19 US Gal of oil per manual for the 175 DT.
