Hi John,
The obvious symptom on mine a few years ago was the trail of white smoke it left behind me.  It ran OK actually and would hold 50 to 60 but obviously was a bit down on power.  The lack of an effective seal was letting the transmission oil get sucked into the combustion chambers.  Even after thoroughly warmed up, it smoked terribly and was white smoke.  I replaced the crank (thanks Richard) and the pistons and rings.  I've only put a few hundred miles on it since.  After the rebuild, it only  had 100 to 110 psi compression ratio but the white smoke was gone.  Still down on power, I rode it to work a few days  at 55 to 60 but it seemed like I was flogging it, so it's been sittting ever since.  I guess I would need to have the heads planed to get some of the compression back (to 140-150).

Jay, I'm not certain what the symptoms of leaking center seal are. The symptoms you had may have been a bad center seal, but the center seal doesn't let transmission oil in, the right end seal in the rotary valve cover does if it goes bad. That will only cause the right cylinder to smoke, also; the left exhaust will be normal.

I am not an engine expert, but I do know one symptom of bad crank seals:
Hard or impossible to start due to the fact what when a center crank seal is bad
or going bad the cylinders can not hold the proper vacuum, which prevents air being
drawn through the carburetors therefore not drawing fuel correctly

This symptom will get worse as the center seal leaks more and more

Hope this helps a bit.
Thanks
