ok clutch off ,

idler bearings replaced,

and fitted all back together

next hiccup was i was missing a pin that the left hand side rotary valve needed to turn

old number 2 screwdriver to the rescue

the steel shaft on that screwdriver is bloody hard, ended up wrecking a new hacksaw blade cutting it

time for pistons and what not to be fitted

love the new old stock 60's era bearings,

barrel posts fitted

and barrels

i have to wait on 2 bearings and a seal turning up so i can finish the generator,

also went to fit the new points and condensers,  fucken points were the worng size,  but i managed to fit the new condensers,

and cleaned up the old points which turned out pretty good any way.

the generator is going to be the bit that holds me up,  along with random carb parts that are coming out of the states.

plenty of other shit to be doing i suppose,

right,

i managed to get the generator rebuilt,

im pretty fucked off though,  the parts i ordered for it,

new cam, points etc were all for the older model which had a big gear which spun at half the speed.

so the cam needed to have 2 lobes on it, where on my model they put in an idler gear and a small main ger to get it to do a single rotation for every rotation the engine did,

i ordered the right parts but the wrong parts turned up,  this was a year ago, so didnt notice till now,

och well,  cant do much about it now,

old cam back in ;(

so i got it in place and spent a supid amount of time getting it timed up,  mainly because i cant tell my left from my right, and was timing the wrong cylinder

then i went about rebuilding the carbs, setting the floats etc cleaning everything again,

and fitted them

so thats it for now,  engine is now fully rebuilt and ready to fit back in the frame,

but first ill degrease the frame from its 38 year old grease and muck,

change the fork oil and probably seals

change the front and rear shoes, and check all the bearings etc, and order a new chain for it as well,

the end is neigh

ok where was i,
i degreased the frame and gave it a general tidy up.

put new shoes in both drums,

changed the fork oil and seals

got the bike back on its wheels again and fitted the engine

ran the cables,  and connected carbs up

connected all the electrics back up,
best bike ever for wiring,  see a wire, connect it to another wire of the same colour,  and repeat,  was so easy,  no stupid indicators,,   and a cool old school rectifier,

plus the coolest brake switch ive ever seen :D

then chuck the tank and seat on,

then connected the exhausts,

and kick starter and gear shift,

so thats where i stand,

ive got to get a few bits before i can attempt to kick the old girl over,

fuel hose,
fuel tap,
2 stroke oil,
engine oil,
battery acid and then charge the battery,

at some stage i will need to get.

new tyres,
new throttle cable,
throttle grips,
new tank pads (missing from original parts order)
kick start rubber,
gear change rubber,
foot peg rubber

not much happening, as im waiting for parts, (and an email back from richard ;) )

so i decided to see if i could clean out the rusty tank internals

i looked on youtube, and the consensus was vinegar if you didnt mind waiting, or Muratic Acid (swimming pool cleaner/ Spirit of Salts / brick cleaner)

since my local hareware shop was closed i decided to just get some vinegar and see how it goes,

also decided to chuck on the chain,

and sprocket cover, and highway gear selector

hopefully my new fuel tap will arrive tomorrow  which is actually a kz900 unit, whilst not identical to the original, its close enough :D

You've done a lot of work. Hopefully you get rewarded with some smoke from the pipes soon!

well the vinegar worked ok, but not aggressive enough,
but this is the clour of the crud that came out

so i bit the bullet and got some "deck and patio cleaner" (hydrochloric /Muriatic acid)
it was 20% some of the pool stuff is around 36%

worked great, did a better job in a hour than what vinegar did in 2 days

so in celebration of having a clean tank, i jerry rigged the fuel lines and attempted to start the old girl!

half a dozen kicks and she fired to life.

great success :D

well in other news, some little retard broken into my garage and stole my bandit 600 commuter,

thankfully they left my bmw, suzuki b120 and bridgestone alone,

still an arse, so this months pay has been diverted away from bridgestone matters into a new commuter.

not exactly what i was after to use as a winter hack in scotland,

but the price was too good to pass up.

With an advertised top end of 155mph. That ought to get you to work in a snap. Proceed carefully! ;D

right ive kind of been slack,

but, ive got most of the bits now to finish this,

i put new tyres and tubes on, the rubber knee guards are fitted,

had to fluff around with the timing quite a bit, i was miles out in the end,  ive got it as close as i can with out a timing light,

but it now seems to start first kick and doesnt piss petrol all over the place now,

still to take it out for a run,

but heres a cold start up video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqG3bFnNtg8&feature=youtu.be
ill keep ya posted. post shake down ride

well something isnt quite right in the force,

starts first kick, idles fine,
but its seriously down on power, like id say 5 or 6hp not the advertised 20hp.
i thought i'd change out the carbs as i couldnt get one of them to stop pissing fuel
so got some genuine mikuni vm18-144  going from the stock vm17-18
they are pretty much the same.
i tried the stock 95 mains with 15 pilot = no better
tryed the 70 mains with 30 pilot that came in the carbs (another bridgestone rider skiri251 has had success with setup)

its certainly better than the 95 mains set up but topped out at 45 mph and couldn't even hold speed in top gear

ive had problems with some aftermarket exhaust gaskets sealing... mainly because the pieces of crap melted

yep quality

so i got a set of genuine old stock bridgestone ones to try out

so thats where i am.

compression is bang on, spark is good, fuelling is where it should be..  may be. :D
timing is as close as i can humanly get it.

ill post ..post ride with the new gasket rubbers :D

i dunno though, my little kawasaki kh125 rotary valve
would eat this for breakfast at this stage.  even my little piston port suzuki b120 is quicker.

My stock rubber joints were hardened and cracked. That made exhaust a bit noisy but no change in power.
I replaced them with Chinese silicone hoses for intercooler. They are holding up so far.

Did you check the muffler inserts (diffusers)?

ok partial success,

its running loads better managed to get to 70 before one of the baffles came flying out :D and i stopped to turn around to pick it up,
the other baffle in the exhaust is broken off inside the exhaust and only half of it is able to come out,
not really a problem for now,  but will become one when it gets coked up with carbon and i cant remove it. :(

its still a bit shit down low getting off the mark.
unsure if this is a carburation issue or if its the characteristic of the bike.

ill post a video riding it once i figure out how to hold my phone and ride at the same time

Good to hear it's running better.

>its still a bit shit down low getting off the mark.

That is my sentiment too.
There is no front wheel poping acceleration there with my BS200 either.
I switched from 16T to 15T front sprocket and that helped a bit but I don't feel 2 stroke.

its weird, it feels like my kh125 at the top end which was dyno'd at 15hp
but it has no where near the pulling power down low,

i think im going to swap the carbs back to the stock set up but use the floats and float needle.
and replace all the jets with stock sized ones.

i was reading the http://www.mikuni.com/pdf/vmmanual.pdf
and it explained the whole small main with big pilot jet conundrum with these new carbs,
and basically points to the needle as a possible place to start looking.
well thats the way i read it,  2 stroke tuning = dark art :D

Pick up a copy of Gordon Jennings 2 Stroke Tuners Handbook...splains alot. 2 Strokes are all about how they breathe (and scavange).

Good luck with that.
I may follow if you succeed, although my stock carbs are so messed up they didn't give me no power from bottom to top.
