Rubber motor mounts
« on: October 29, 2010, 08:30:52 PM »
I'm preping my frame for refinishing, and one of the tasks was to remove the rubber motor mounts.  They were hard and badly deteriorated.  I had made press and backup tools for the other motor mounts which worked quite well, so I thought it would be simple to remove the mounts from the frame.

WRONG!!!  Turns out there is a lip around the bottom of the holes in the frame which prevent you from simply pressing out the old mounts.  I ended up using a small sharpened punch to carefully cut through the outer metal ring of the old mounts and then yanking the remains out with vicegrips.  Not very elegant, but quick and effective as long as you don't damage the holes in the frame.

If someone has found a better way to remove these lower mounts, speak up, it will help the next person who attempts to replace them!

I used a triangle shaped file to cut a slit thru the outer ring which loosened the fit then sprayed some penetrating oil to loosen it up even further then just used a punch and beat it out. The important part I found is relieving the tight fit by cutting a slit in it. You came up with a great topic it will be interesting to hear the other members ideas as there is so many ways to do it.

I used the Honda wheel bearing tool to remove the lower mounts bushes its a bush with a slot in it so i put the bush in
So the slot was facing up and i used the taper bar and you hit the bar with a hammer it spreads the bush grips the inner
part of the bush and out it comes i will try and get pictures and part numbers for the tool it works really well.
Thanks.
Reed.
