Title: barn fresh 175DT
Post by: cwesty0 on June 17, 2011, 06:29:03 PM
Hi all. New to the forum here and also to Bridgestones, but not to bikes. A friend of mine recently got his father-in-laws 66 175DT and wants me to rework it , possible not a full on resto but presentable none the less. Pulled the jugs and seems that BOTH outter circlips for the piston pins were missing , and very deep grooves in cylinder where the pins walked out. Is this a common thing or did someone maybe forget to put them back in?  Reason I think that is because there it still crosshatch in the cylinders , NO rust at all in them and ODO reads 16,000 plus miles.
Here are a couple pics of what I am starting with , IF they post

That's a nice one.... it looks to be pretty complete. I've never heard of missing circlips so there must be a story to that. You will probably never know how that happened.

Everything is there and straight too! Makes up for that though with all the surface rust. Anyone have any idea what the 2 longer brackets attached to the rear shocks might be?

Brackets possibly for saddle bags? Saddlle bags were a fairly common owner or dealer instaaled  option in those days

I have the engine cases all cleaned/degreased. What is the best way to get the factory finish back on them?  There is obvious discoloration in spots that won;t clean up. Can a person use walnut shells in a blast cabinet or a soda blaster to bring back the origional sheen?   Thanks

I have just done my cases on my Bridgestone GTR i blast them in the cabinet then i wash them in soap and water!
Then i put them in the ultrasonic tank bring them out let them dry then soda blast with baking soda.
Wash them again with soap and water leave in the sun to dry, then i coat with ACF50 to seal the casings.
And that's it! i will get some pictures.
PS i use the carpet baking soda because it gives a nice shine on the engine casings and cheap to buy.
Thanks.
Steve.

Its a lot of work to do all that you can send your casings to be Vapour blasted that does a very nice finish as well.
Thanks.

Finally back to working on this gem again , been a real cooker here in Ohio!!!   Got the engine cases cleaned up , degreased the  heck outta them and soda blasted afterwards. Looks pretty good.  Ordering the rest of the engine parts from Richard in a day or 3 so maybe get this engine entirely back together before snow flies. In the mean time , frame to be cleaned up and repainted. Have the smaller body work all cleaned and primed , ready for paint. This won;t be a factory resto , more of a resto-mod I guess you would call it? Pretty close but a few personal touches.

Steve

here are a couple photos of the cases. Still need to clean with some carb cleaner to rid the excess gasket sealer. Considering how they looked before cleaning , they came out pretty good. Have some dark oxidation?  that hard to get rid of though. All I did was to blast them with Arm and Hammer baking soda thru my siphon gun after degreasing.

Good job, and all the work done at home in your own workshop!
And at very little cost plus your time.
Thanks.

I have a DeVilbis 25 gal , 5 hp 125psi. this is like 10cfm @ 90psi.  The suction hose is only about 1/8 - 3/16" id that I put into the soda and have to wiggle it around sometime to keep the soda flowing. Also have bout a 3/16" opening on the blaster tip.

thanks i will have to buy a 5 horse compressor mine doesn't have enough power its alright for the small stuff but runs out of  puff .

If I run my blaster with the larger tip it will run out of puff , but not much of a problem at all with the smaller tube and tip for the soda blasting. The biggest problem I have is with it so humid the last few weeks is moisture in the line , I need a bigger moisture trap.

Have some of the smaller pieces painted , they look a little pinkish in the pics (must be the camera) but match a fresh headlight housing we found. Still have to wetsand a little with some 1500 and re-buff clearcoat. here are a couple pics.

Looks great Craig...only thing is the tail light housing would have originally been silver.  Keep up the good work!

Just found another method for cleaning rust from an old fuel tank. There was mainly surface rust in this tank , nothing heavy. Used a couple small jugs of CLR , in the grey bottles , filled the rest up with water and let it sit overnight. Rinsed it out after about 24 hours soaking and the tank looks great!  I'll try to get an after pic , didn;t get a before pic.
Just passin along a little info that someone might find helpful.

Barn fresh 175 is now a runner!!!!!  Well , it was anyhow. I left the key on for a few minutes while doing some other stuff and I think I fried one set of points or the condensor. Will swap the wires out tomorrow eve from condensors to the points and see if I have spark on the other side.

so far been runing premix and just filling the float bowls. Don;t want to run real long yet without the oil injection filled up yet. I thought I read somewhere that there is a place to fill/lube the oil pump gears but can't seem to locate that info now. Is this so or are they self lubed with either the tranny oil or the injection oil? Also , how reliable are the pumps after sitting for quite a few years?  Wuold it be wise to get a new one or go with this one?

Thanks all for your help and hopefully be adding some completed pics soon!!!  Abd taking a ride of course.

If you have to fill the oil pump gearbox manually, you will find a level plug on the face of the oval pump gearcase, just ahead of the pump itself. It's a 6mm bolt or screw. If you have one of these, remove it and also remove the 6mm screw above it that holds the gearcase on. Fill the case with oil (10W40) through that hole until it rune out of the level plug hole.

Later bikes dispensed with the level plug and had the case automatically lubricated from the transmission oil.

Thanks Graham. This is a 66 so it probably has the fill plug.  Will check it out this weekend.

We now have a ridable bike!! At least around the yard and around my block here. No liscense yet. Here are just a few pics of where it is at now.  It sounds great!!!!  It needs some more cleaning up again and isn't a factory resto but it is what the owner was after , something that looked presentable without spending 1000's of dollars. Hopefully I achieved that for him. Have to work on some cable routing though I think , clutch cable seems to be sticking out along ways. Anyone have a guide on where exactally the cables should be running?

Craig

next project is my brothers Yamaha RD350 , or so he thinks *L*

Thanks alot Moonpup and Steve. It was fun doing! Have to sort out some shifting troubles though. Kinda of hard finding the right gears. Hopefully nothing inside the tranny though and just something simple in the shift mechanism under the side cover.

Sounds and looks good. Does it have stock baffles in the mufflers? It sounds a bit sharper than my memory of a 175.

We aren't sure what is in the mufflers. The exhaust he got off Ebay. I thought it sounded pretty throaty myself. My wife says it is loud coming down the street *L*

Good job. Looks like an everyday runner. I think the baffles/stingers are missing. Congrats
