Preferred method for installing new seals

dcr:
Is there a "best method" for the installation of new oil seals in the motor?

Say you split the cases and replace all the seals. Do you install the seals on the respective shaft and then bolt the cases together with the seal in place, or do you assemble the motor and then drive the seals in place after bolting up the halves?

Sye:
Place the seals in position before bolting the cases together.

Sye - thats how I always have done it but recently replaced 1 seal so I didn't bother splitting the cases and it made me wonder if that was a better or more efficient method.

I would've guessed putting them in after would be the way to go... but what do I know?  ;D

BS Mechanic:
If only a seal needs replaced, there's no need to split the cases just for that.  If you have the cases split, I find it's somewhat easier to put the seals in place before assembling the case halves.  In both cases, be sure the seal is straight when you finish, and adjust if needed.
